So, Krafton, the company behind PUBG, is really diving into AI. They’ve announced a program where employees can voluntarily leave, and honestly, it feels like they’re trying to downsize the human workforce to make room for AI. It’s a bit unsettling as a gamer who enjoys their games, knowing this is happening behind the scenes.
Krafton, the company behind popular games like PUBG, recently offered a voluntary resignation package to its employees, as reported by Business Korea and noted by Eurogamer. The package, which began on November 12th, offered severance based on how long someone had worked at the company: one to two years received six to twelve months’ salary, five years or less received up to 18 months, eight years or less up to 24 months, eleven years or less up to 30 months, and those with over eleven years of service received 36 months’ salary. Krafton stated this isn’t a layoff, but a way to help employees pursue new opportunities with the rise of AI technology.
According to a company representative, the main goal is to help employees shape their careers and take on new opportunities, both within the company and beyond, as artificial intelligence changes the way we work. The company intends to empower employees to choose whether to continue developing their skills internally or explore opportunities outside the organization.
During a recent earnings call on November 4th, Krafton CFO Bae Dong-geun announced the company has paused all hiring. He explained this is to encourage employees to become more productive as Krafton invests in artificial intelligence.
We’ve paused all hiring across the company, except for teams developing new technology and AI experts, explained Dong-geun. Instead of cutting costs by focusing on AI, we need to improve overall employee productivity. We’ll reassess our five-year content plan announced earlier this year and share any updates later.
As a big fan of Krafton, I was really excited to hear they’re going all-in on AI! They announced back in October 2025 that they’re investing $70 million to become an “AI-first” company, hoping to grow a lot in the years to come. And it seems to be paying off already! Their latest earnings report from November 4th showed their best quarter ever. They made 2.407 trillion won – that’s about $1.6 billion in revenue – and an operating profit of 1.052 trillion won, or around $718 million. What’s even cooler is this was the first time since the company started that they’ve made over 1 trillion won in operating profit during the third quarter. It’s awesome to see them doing so well!
Not all of Krafton’s game studios are focusing heavily on artificial intelligence. The team behind Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds Entertainment, has stated they won’t be using AI in their next survival adventure game.
Donya Abramo, the community manager, doesn’t expect much to change. Their teams, processes, and systems are already in place. However, their partnership with Krafton remains consistent – Krafton provides helpful tools and resources, and the team decides which ones best suit their needs.
