Sony announced a new installment in the Horizon series. Original devs don’t work on the MMO, and it won’t be released on PS5

Okay, so all those whispers were true! We’re finally getting a Horizon MMO! Sony and NCSoft just officially announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, and I’m already hyped. Check out the trailer below – it looks amazing!

Horizon Steel Frontiers in a nutshell

Okay, so the biggest news about Steel Frontiers is where you’ll be able to play it. Honestly, I was shocked to hear that Sony’s PlayStation 5 isn’t even on the list! It’s being built for mobile – iOS and Android, which is pretty cool – and PC players like me will be able to jump in through NCSoft’s PURPLE client. Definitely not what I expected!

In Horizon Steel Frontiers, players take on the role of machine hunters who scavenge for deals in a landscape based on Arizona and New Mexico, known as Deathlands. Like most online role-playing games, you’ll begin by creating a character, and the developers promise a wide range of customization options to do so.

The game will build on what fans love about the series – particularly fighting giant machines – and combine it with features commonly found in online multiplayer games. Players will share a vast game world with thousands of others, cooperating to defeat powerful enemies and competing for valuable resources.

At its heart, Horizon Steel Frontiers is all about the excitement of battling giant machines. The original Horizon games were incredibly popular for letting players hunt these massive creatures, and now the team is bringing that same experience to a massive multiplayer online world, according to executive producer Sung-Gu Lee.

Horizon Steel Frontiers is a complete massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by NCSoft for mobile devices. In Steel Frontiers, players become machine hunters exploring the Deathlands, a region inspired by the landscapes of Arizona and New Mexico. The game allows you to join thousands of other players in a dynamic world where you can cooperate to defeat powerful machines, compete with rival groups, and fight for valuable resources. This blend of teamwork and competition creates unpredictable and exciting gameplay moments, according to Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director.

The game will include completely new gameplay features. For example, players will be able to collect weapons dropped by defeated machines, carry them on their mounts, and use them in future fights.

Sony and NCSoft haven’t announced a specific release date for Horizon Steel Frontiers yet. They’ve said they’re aiming to launch the game as quickly as they can.
