Black Widow’s Death Scene In Avengers: Endgame Had ‘Way More Aliens’ Originally. Why Jeremy Renner’s Glad It Changed

Though Avengers: Endgame already features a dramatic conclusion, Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, revealed that one particularly emotional scene was originally much larger in scope. Natasha Romanoff’s sacrifice on Vormir was initially filmed as a large, expansive battle. However, Renner explained in a recent interview that he believes the changes made to the scene were a positive decision.

During a panel at Space Con 2025 (as reported by Popverse), Renner revealed that the emotional goodbye scene between his character and another was originally intended to be much more action-packed with aliens. Marvel ultimately decided to reshoot the sequence to focus on the characters’ personal connection instead.

We filmed a scene that ultimately didn’t make it into the final cut. It was much more elaborate – featuring more spaceships, aliens, and general action. We ended up re-filming it to create the simpler scene you see in the movie now.

You might remember this because Marvel previously showed a more action-packed version of the Vormir scene. When Endgame was released on Blu-ray and Disney+, fans saw an alternate take where Thanos’s army attacks, and Black Widow runs through gunfire before sacrificing herself. While exciting and typical of the MCU, this version focuses more on spectacle than the original’s emotional impact. This alternate scene has been available in bonus features and online since 2019 or 2020.

Renner believes that the straightforward method effectively captured the emotional impact the filmmakers were aiming for. He then added:

The scene felt deeply emotional and had a strong impact. It was truly heartbreaking to film, but also a celebration of everything that came before. It felt like saying goodbye to a long-time friend. Considering the 22 previous films, and knowing it was likely one of Scarlett’s final scenes, the weight of the moment was immense. So many years, stories, and shared experiences had led to this, making it feel incredibly real and allowing us to genuinely connect with the emotions.

This aligns with how the directors, the Russos, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have described the most impactful deaths in Endgame: the movie focuses intensely on personal, quiet moments. The scene on Vormir, for example, boils down to a struggle between two friends—Natasha and Clint—over who will make the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a very intimate moment, highlighting their close bond, rather than a large-scale battle involving armies or reinforcements. It emphasizes the personal connection within the Avengers team.

It’s been a while since Jeremy Renner last played Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. His most recent appearance was in the final episode of the Hawkeye series on December 22, 2021, which has led fans to wonder if he might make a surprise appearance in the next Avengers movie, currently titled Doomsday. Don’t expect the Mayor of Kingstown actor to reveal anything, though – he playfully told Brie Larson, “No, girl,” when asked about a possible cameo. However, knowing that actors often deny things like this, anything is still possible.

Even if Jeremy Renner doesn’t return to the MCU – though it seems improbable – his impact will always be remembered. Scenes like his character’s sacrifice on Vormir are some of the most moving in the entire series, largely because the directors understood when to focus on emotional connection instead of just big action.
