Adele is set to star in a new movie directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, marking his return to filmmaking since 2016’s Nocturnal Animals. The film, based on Anne Rice’s 1982 novel Cry to Heaven, tells the story of two men in 18th-century Italy both affected by castration. One man, Guido, undergoes the procedure to preserve his singing voice as a soprano, while the other, Tonio, is castrated by his brother. They meet in Venice, and Guido becomes Tonio’s vocal coach. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult and Colin Firth, who previously worked with Ford on A Single Man, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a Golden Globe winner for his role in Nocturnal Animals. It’s currently unknown which roles each actor will play.
According to Deadline, the film boasts a stellar supporting cast including Mark Strong (currently starring in Broadway’s Oedipus), Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds (Belfast), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Emmy winner Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), fellow Emmy winner Owen Cooper (Adolescence), Pedro Pascal’s sister Lux Pascal, and Paul Bettany (of The Avengers). Despite such a strong lineup, Ford is choosing to fund the movie independently and will pitch it to studios later. The film is slated for release in late fall 2026, right at the start of awards season, leading many to wonder if Adele will follow Ariana Grande’s path and earn an Oscar nomination for her acting. Only time will tell.
