The competition between streaming services, often called the “streaming wars,” has shifted. While it used to be a fight for subscribers between companies like Netflix and Hulu – who all tried to attract viewers with exclusive shows and movies you had to pay for – Netflix has essentially already won. Each service had its own plan, but Netflix proved to be the most successful.
Netflix was a pioneer in streaming and offers something for everyone, which is why it has the most subscribers. With Disney’s recent decision to discontinue Hulu, it’s clear that Netflix has effectively won the battle to become the leading streaming service.
The streaming wars aren’t over, but simply having the most subscribers isn’t the main goal anymore. Now, Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and other services are focused on how much total time people spend watching content on their platforms. Everyone is trying to grab a bigger share of viewers’ time, though it’s unlikely anyone will overtake Netflix as the leader.
YouTube Has An Impossible Lead In The New Streaming Wars
As a movie and TV buff, I never really thought of YouTube as a serious player in the streaming world. They tried with YouTube TV and original content, but it didn’t quite take off. But it’s funny—now that services like Netflix and Disney+ are realizing it’s not just about subscriptions, but how much people are actually watching, YouTube is suddenly leading the pack. And the craziest part? They didn’t even have to try! All those years of people watching everything from music videos to DIY tutorials have unexpectedly put them on top.
Recent data from September 2025, provided by Nielsen, shows that Americans watch YouTube for about 12.6% of their total TV time. This is slightly less than the combined time spent on Netflix (8.3%) and Disney+ (4.5%). This makes YouTube particularly popular, especially when you consider that most of its content is created by individual users, not a traditional network.
Netflix & Disney+ Must Work With YouTube In The Streaming Wars
Most Americans now watch more content through streaming services than traditional cable or broadcast TV, meaning competition among streamers remains fierce. But YouTube is so far ahead that it’s unlikely any other service will surpass it. Netflix and Disney+ will likely focus on competing with each other, and can potentially benefit from YouTube’s dominance in the market.
Netflix and Disney+ both use YouTube to reach potential viewers, capitalizing on the significant amount of time Americans spend on the platform—over 12%. This YouTube traffic could be crucial in attracting subscribers in the competitive streaming market. However, YouTube itself is likely to remain the dominant force, unaffected by the competition between streaming services.
