Viz Media announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the story of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is expanding with a new manga by reguje. Titled Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Tales of Iga Vol. 1 (or Assassin’s Creed Shadows – Iga no Monogatari Vol. 1 in Japanese), the manga will take place years before the game’s events and reveal new secrets and stories about popular characters.
A manga series called Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Tales of Iga is being created in collaboration with Kodansha, the anime studio behind popular shows like Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga. The story will explore the arrival of Assassins and Templars in Japan, and will feature younger versions of characters from the Assassin’s Creed Shadows game, such as Hattori Hanzo and Fujibayashi Nagato. The manga will begin releasing on the Weekly Young Magazine website on March 20, with translated versions expected soon after. The first volume in English is currently available for pre-order and will be released on June 16, 2026.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Tales of Iga, Vol. 1, feudal Japan is caught in a hidden conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. As the Templars gain power across the country, a lone Assassin and his apprentice travel to Iga—the birthplace of ninjutsu—seeking help from legendary ninja masters like Hattori Hanzo and Momochi Sandayu. Their mission: to fight for justice and stop the Templars by embracing the shadows while striving for the light. This is the story of the ninja who defend Japan.
Released in March to mostly positive reviews, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in 16th-century Japan and features two characters you can play as: the female ninja Fujibayashi Naoe and a fictionalized version of Yasuke, the historical African samurai. Although the game initially received negative reviews from some users, it quickly gained popularity, reaching over a million players on its first day and more than three million within its first week. Critics generally loved the game, giving it a score of 81/100 on Metacritic. However, player reviews were a bit less enthusiastic, averaging 6.2/10.
The first volume of Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Tales of Iga in English is scheduled to be released on June 16, 2026.
