The initial release of UZDoom is now available. This update aims to continue the work of GZDoom, which brought modern improvements to the original Doom and Doom II engines. UZDoom works with both Doom and Doom II, as well as other classic games built on the same technology from id Software, including Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and Chex Quest.
This mod came about because of a disagreement that broke up the team working on GZDoom. The trouble started when Christoph “Graf Zahl” Oleckers, the original creator of the mod, added code generated by AI without proper testing. This likely violated the terms of the Github license. While problematic for fan projects, this could have been a serious issue for game developers who rely on GZDoom to build commercial games.
The development of UZDoom begins exactly where it ended in GZDoom..
The problem was made worse because Graf Zahl hadn’t been very involved with the project lately, and other developers had been doing most of the work. Feeling frustrated, they decided to create a new project based on the GZDoom code, which led to the creation of UZDoom.
As a long-time Doom mod player, I’m starting to think UZDoom is where it’s at. It feels like the future of modding for this engine, honestly. A lot of the best modders have moved off the GZDoom team, and it’s hard to see Oleckers keeping things going alone. Plus, the GZDoom devs were already working on a ton of cool stuff for version 5.0, and all of that is getting rolled right into UZDoom. The community seems to agree – even the creators of awesome mods like Trench Foot are saying they’re moving their work over. It’s a really exciting time!
The newest version of UZDoom is still under development, but the creators have released it for community testing. It already includes most of the features they planned. One notable change is that texture filtering isn’t turned on automatically – it’s an optional setting, which addresses a long-standing complaint from GZDoom users. The update also retains all the previous enhancements, like improved mouse controls and support for wide, high-resolution screens.
