Ncuti Gatwa and Cynthia Erivo Join Animated Musical ‘Bad Fairies’

Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in Doctor Who, will star alongside Cynthia Erivo of Wicked in Warner Bros.’ new animated musical, Bad Fairies.

According to Deadline, Ncuti Gatwa is joining the voice cast of the original musical comedy, alongside Cynthia Erivo, who signed on last month to voice Jayne Staplegun. Bad Fairies is about a mischievous group of fairies causing trouble in a magical world.

While details about Ncuti Gatwa’s character are being kept secret, Cynthia Erivo will play a pioneering fairy who leads a revolt. The movie is being made by Locksmith Animation and Warner Bros. Animation and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21, 2027.

Deborah Frances-White, known for her work on Young Dracula, wrote Bad Fairies. Megan Nicole Dong, who directed episodes of Centaurworld, directed it, with Olivier Staphylas (How to Train Your Dragon) co-directing.

As a huge musical fan, I’m really excited about the music for this project! The team behind Six: The Musical, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, are writing the songs, which is fantastic news – they clearly know how to craft a killer soundtrack. Plus, they’ve brought in Isabelle Summers, who’s done incredible work with Florence + The Machine, to help out. And with Ian Eisendrath, who did the music for KPop Demon Hunters, as the executive music producer, I have a feeling the music is going to be truly special.

We don’t have many details about the movie’s story or characters yet, but it’s expected to be funny and feature a great soundtrack.

Cynthia Erivo is currently promoting her new movie, Wicked: For Good, where she plays the lead role of Elphaba. Tickets sold incredibly fast, breaking records within a day of becoming available, suggesting the film will be a box office success. Wicked: For Good officially comes out on November 21st, and some cinemas are planning to show it alongside the original Wicked film as a double feature, directed by John M. Chu.

Ncuti Gatwa is known for playing The Doctor in the popular series Doctor Who, but he first gained international recognition for his role as Eric in the Netflix hit Sex Education. He’s also appeared in films like Barbie and The Roses, and has upcoming roles in The Queen of Fashion and Frank and Percy.

The future of the film Bad Fairies is uncertain with Warner Bros. being bought by another company. However, because the movie already has its actors and team in place, it probably won’t be canceled. There’s a possibility Warner Bros. will be broken up and sold, with Paramount and Netflix reportedly interested in buying Warner Bros. Discovery.
