Nintendo recently shared its movie plans with investors, revealing at least four films in development. Having been a leader in gaming since the late 1980s, the company is now expanding into movies, bringing its popular game franchises to the big screen. They started with The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023 and plan to continue in 2026 with a sequel.
Nintendo isn’t stopping at just one movie. During their recent financial report, they revealed a plan for at least four video game movies, marking what seems to be their first official movie release schedule. This news comes as they prepare for the launch of their next console, currently known as the Switch 2.
I was really excited to hear about their plans for ‘Movies and Videos’! They showed off four movie posters, and two of them actually announced the titles and release dates. The other two were super mysterious – just a question mark on each, which definitely got everyone talking and wondering what they have up their sleeve.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the company is still planning to release more movies in the future, and they aim to establish a regular schedule for these releases.
The new movie posters include a strange ellipsis, suggesting these four films are only the first part of a larger plan for movies based on the game.
The 4 Movies on Nintendo’s Movie Release Calendar
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo’s next big movie release is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This animated sequel, created by Illumination Entertainment, follows the massive success of the first Mario Bros. movie, which earned over $1 billion. It also signals a new approach for Nintendo, as they begin to license their popular characters and stories for wider theatrical releases.
The highly anticipated animated Mario movie is scheduled to launch in theaters on April 3, 2026. Chris Pratt will return as the voice of Mario in this new adventure, which will draw inspiration from the popular Super Mario Galaxy games and take the story into outer space. While details are limited, a leaked plot summary suggests we’ll see new faces like Yoshi, Wario, and Bowser Jr. join the cast.
The Legend of Zelda

Besides the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has only officially announced one other film project: The Legend of Zelda. This will be Nintendo’s first live-action movie in recent years. Wes Ball, who directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is directing, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason will star as Link and Zelda, respectively.
Sony Pictures is making a movie based on The Legend of Zelda, bringing Nintendo’s popular fantasy adventure series to the big screen for the first time. The film will follow a young hero’s journey across a vast land as they confront a powerful, ancient evil. The Zelda movie is set to be released on May 7, 2027.
Untitled Nintendo Movie 1

Nintendo recently revealed a list of upcoming movies, and it surprisingly includes two titles currently unknown to the public. One is believed to be a new film featuring Donkey Kong, spun off from the popular Super Mario Bros. Movie and created by the same team at Illumination. Talk about a Donkey Kong movie starring Seth Rogen as the iconic ape has been circulating since before the first Mario movie even came out.
Interest in a Donkey Kong movie has grown recently after a copyright filing for a project called “Untitled Donkey Kong Motion Picture” was found. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, the evidence suggests that a solo Donkey Kong film is likely in development and could be released in the near future.
Untitled Nintendo Movie 2

Nintendo has two unannounced movies in the works, and fans are speculating about what they could be. Possibilities include another Mario Bros. movie, a Luigi’s Mansion film, or even a Kirby adaptation. Recently, rumors have surfaced about a Metroid movie being developed, but Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any details yet.
We don’t know yet if this project will be a live-action movie or animation, and no film studios are currently involved. However, with Nintendo properties like Mario and Zelda becoming popular in Hollywood, a Metroid adaptation could be a good fit for the company, potentially attracting an older audience than their other films.
