Annie Potts’ Young Sheldon Replacement Explains Meemaw’s Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Fate

Now that Young Sheldon has finished, Annie Potts has found a successor who’s even more impressive than her role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. When Connie was first introduced on The Big Bang Theory, June Squibb played a quieter, more subdued version of the character. While Squibb’s Meemaw was instantly popular, it was Annie Potts’ portrayal that truly made the character beloved by audiences.

Although Connie wasn’t a biological member of the Cooper family, she lived close by and quickly became an important part of Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy’s lives. As Young Sheldon developed beyond simply setting up the story for Jim Parsons’ The Big Bang Theory, Meemaw’s character grew, and she began to have her own independent storylines.

Annie Potts Has Secured Best Medicine As Her Proper Young Sheldon Replacement

The decision to end Young Sheldon sparked a lot of debate. Though the finale felt natural – with Sheldon moving to California after his father’s passing, as established in The Big Bang Theory – many viewers felt the show had potential for a few more seasons. Some argued that stories about the rest of the family, like Meemaw, could have continued beyond Sheldon’s departure.

Annie Potts publicly expressed her disappointment about the end of Young Sheldon, stating she didn’t understand why a popular show needed to be canceled. Now, after a year and a half, she’s found a new television role in the Fox comedy Best Medicine. The show centers around Dr. Martin Best, a talented surgeon played by Josh Charles, who unexpectedly leaves his big-city career to practice medicine in the small coastal town where he grew up. Potts plays Joan, Dr. Best’s warm and endearing aunt.

Best Medicine Explains Meemaw’s Absence In Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage

Following Young Sheldon, June Squibb continued playing the beloved Meemaw in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Although the new series centered on the McAllister family, Connie, as Meemaw, was still a key part of Georgie and Mandy’s relationship, and witnessed the birth of their daughter, Ceecee. The couple even chose to name their baby after Mary’s mother, a touching tribute to the character.

Despite other members of the Cooper family appearing in season two of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, their grandmother, Meemaw, hasn’t made even a brief appearance. Although Mary and Missy mentioned her, it’s surprising she wasn’t included, but June Squibb’s ongoing role in the show Best Medicine likely explains why.

Similar to shows like The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, the new series Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is filmed in California. However, Fox is choosing to film on the East Coast, which fits with the setting of their show, Best Medicine. This creates a challenge for June Squibb, who plays Meemaw, as it’s hard for her to be available. Even if she’s willing to return, her schedule needs to match the filming dates of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, even if it’s just for a brief appearance.
