During a recent earnings call, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, stated the company is exploring AI for non-creative tasks, but has no plans to use it to eliminate jobs.
Zelnick explained that the company’s new AI tools are proving beneficial in several business areas. He emphasized they aren’t using AI as a reason to lay off employees, nor do they see that as a possibility. Instead, the goal is to free up talented staff from repetitive work, allowing them to focus on more creative and engaging projects, ultimately improving the company’s overall performance. However, he clarified that while AI is helpful, it wouldn’t enable them to cut costs by 5% overnight.
Strauss Zelnick has often expressed skepticism about the hype surrounding generative AI, stating it won’t be able to replicate the quality of human-created games like Grand Theft Auto 6. While recently clarifying his stance, he still believes AI could be a helpful tool for game development, as long as it’s used correctly.
Just to clarify, I do see potential benefits to AI,” Zelnick explained. “My point is that AI relies on past information and processing power, and it can’t replace truly original and creative thinking. This isn’t just my opinion; it’s a simple fact. I’m confident no one can prove me wrong about that.
Technology is central to our work. While creativity is what fuels us, we rely on tools – specifically computers and technical software – to bring those ideas to life. As these tools get better, we become more efficient and effective, allowing our creative teams to focus even more on innovation. Therefore, when used correctly, AI can be a positive force for creativity and, ultimately, for making better games.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick believes artificial intelligence won’t cause layoffs at his company, a different view from some other industry leaders. Both Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson and Microsoft’s Brad Smith have suggested AI will initially result in job cuts, although they predict it will ultimately create more jobs in the long run.
