It wasn’t surprising, but still disappointing, to see a copycat game appear. Whenever a popular indie game does well on Steam, it’s only a matter of time before someone tries to profit by creating a cheap imitation. That’s exactly what’s happened with Megabonk, the incredibly fun roguelike shooter, which now has a blatant clone on the Nintendo Switch. And unfortunately, this is likely just the first of many similar games to appear.

Megabonk wannabes are already here

A new game called Gigabonk: Mega Survivors has been released on the Nintendo eShop, with a launch date of November 27, 2025. However, it appears to be a very close copy of the game Megabonk. While it’s common for games to draw inspiration from others, this situation seems to be a clear case of plagiarism.

The game looks and sounds remarkably similar to Megabonk – even the music from the opening chest is the same! Looking at screenshots of Gigabonk on the eShop makes it clear that many of the characters and enemies are heavily inspired by, or directly taken from, the original game.

Everything about the game is exactly the same – the interface, goals, books, and items. You’re still finding a portal and defeating a boss, and things like the Banana weapon and Regen Tome are all there. The developer really didn’t put in much effort to make anything original, though calling a boss “King of Tree” is, I guess, a little bit creative.

Looking at other games made by the developers of Gigabonk: Mega Survivors, it’s obvious that they’re either created using AI or heavily depend on it. These games generally seem rushed, offering simple, repetitive gameplay that quickly becomes dull.

Not the first, and almost certainly not the last one we’ll see

Okay, so Megabonk just came out on September 18th, which means this copycat game, Gigabonk, has probably been in the works for less than three months. Honestly, I’m expecting it to be a complete mess, and I’m not even sure it’ll come out! I’m hoping the creator of Megabonk, Vedinad, sees what’s happening and does something about it legally against UMARO.

This isn’t the only game trying to copy Megabonk. Megabonk Smash was released on the PlayStation Store just yesterday. Despite being an obvious copycat and receiving poor reviews, it’s still available for purchase. Unfortunately, the Sony, Nintendo, and Xbox online stores are filled with similar, low-quality rip-offs.

So, get this – they’re already announcing another one for 2026 called Ultra Bonk Survivors! The art isn’t a straight-up rip-off, thankfully, but reading the game’s description? Yeah, it’s pretty obvious where they got their ideas from. Let’s just say it’s…inspired by another game.

We saw a similar situation earlier this year with the release of R.E.P.O. Soon after, games that looked very similar started appearing on the PlayStation and Nintendo online stores. While some of those copies were removed or never launched, a few are still available. This could be the start of many games trying to copy Megabonk.
