Arcades aren’t as popular as they used to be, but many of the large arcade cabinets from the 1990s offered unique competitive gameplay – like team battles and direct head-to-head challenges – that home consoles couldn’t deliver at the time. Now, after first appearing in 1996, Namco’s Tokyo Wars is being released on consoles for the very first time.
Tokyo Wars, a classic tank battle game, is now available on modern consoles as part of the Arcade Archives collections. Players can control one or more tanks and compete against opponents in locations like downtown Tokyo and the city’s docks. Originally, arcades allowed up to eight players to battle simultaneously by connecting four two-player cabinets. These arcade cabinets even had air-powered recoil to make players feel like they were really firing a tank!
Just so you know, the Arcade Archives version on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch has fewer features than the Arcade Archives 2 version available on other consoles. This older version includes the original arcade game, a high-score challenge, and a ‘caravan’ mode where you compete for the best score in 10 minutes. Online leaderboards are available for all of these modes.
Split-screen multiplayer, a time attack mode, and variable refresh rate (VRR) support will only be available in the Arcade Archive 2 versions of the game on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2. Both the Arcade Archive 1 and 2 versions of Tokyo Wars are currently available for purchase digitally on their respective consoles.
For a more relaxed arcade experience, the Golden Tee Arcade Classics collection came out earlier this year. If you’re interested in the fast-paced Cyberpunk 2077 Turf Wars arcade game, however, you’ll need to visit a Dave & Buster’s or another contemporary arcade.
