Season 3 of The Night Agent will be the show’s last, bringing a successful run to a close. The action thriller, based on the Matthew Quirk novel, quickly became a huge hit for Netflix, ranking among its most popular series ever. It filled a similar niche to shows like Amazon’s Reacher or Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. While the first season generated a lot of excitement and suggested the show could run for many years, the less favorable reviews for season 2 have led to doubts about its long-term future.
Season two of The Night Agent received largely negative reviews, scoring only 38% on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score. Critics found the plot repetitive and felt it lacked the strength of the first season, possibly due to the absence of the original book by Matthew Quirk. A lot of fan frustration focused on the character of Rose Larkin and Luciane Buchanan’s portrayal of her, despite Buchanan being a strong actress, previously praised for her work in Chief of War. The issues seemed to stem from the writing for Rose in this season.

Considering the negative feedback about Rose’s storyline in season two, it’s understandable that The Night Agent decided to take her character in a new direction. She never quite fit as a former tech CEO repeatedly thrown into dangerous situations – like infiltrating the Iranian embassy with no spy experience. While many good shows feature unprepared characters in serious trouble, Rose’s biggest issue was her inconsistent behavior, constantly switching between being upset about the danger and frustrated about being left out of the loop.
It’s clear the creators of The Night Agent struggled with what to do with Rose after the first season, but completely removing her from the show wasn’t the answer. While she wasn’t used effectively in season 2, she played a key role in the success of season 1. Gabriel Basso is engaging as Peter Sutherland thanks to his charisma, even if the character himself isn’t very deep. That charisma was even stronger because of his co-star, with whom he shared a compelling romantic connection.
Season one of The Night Agent featured two characters in life-or-death situations, both struggling with personal grief and family secrets. Their complicated relationship added emotional weight to the story. The connection between Peter and Rose felt genuine, making the high stakes believable. However, instead of developing their dynamic through strong writing and logical explanations, the show unexpectedly removed one of the main characters.
Season 3 of The Night Agent is expected in 2026, but it will be quite a departure from what viewers have come to expect. Instead of focusing on the romantic connection between the two main characters, the show is shifting towards a more standard action thriller format, similar to novels by authors like Lee Child or James Patterson. While Netflix could improve the show’s reception, it lost something special by moving away from the female lead. Many viewers hope to see her character, Rose, return in season 4.
