Record-Breaking Demon Slayer Movie Officially Surpasses Avengers: Endgame Box Office Internationally

The anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle is about to achieve a major milestone, potentially becoming the first animated movie to earn $1 billion globally. What once seemed like an impossible goal is now within reach, as Infinity Castle has seen a surprising new release and is now performing better than even Avengers: Endgame.

The new film, Infinity Castle, is breaking records after its announcement. Within just five hours and with very little promotion, it pre-sold ¥20 million worth of tickets – that’s about $2.8 million in the U.S. According to reports on X (formerly Twitter), Demon Slayer’s pre-sales in China have already hit $3 million, and the movie is predicted to earn $200 million during its opening weekend. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame made over $100 million on its first day in China back in April 2019.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’s Surprising Release Shatters Presale Records, Eyes $1B Milestone

Experts like Davi de Moraes believe Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle could earn $400 million at the box office in China. Considering the film has already made over $670 million globally, strong sales in China would bring its total earnings to $1 billion, making it the first anime film to reach that milestone worldwide.

If a Japanese anime film like Demon Slayer achieves major success this year, it would signal a big change in the movie world, with anime releases such as Infinity Castle gaining ground against traditional U.S. blockbusters and superhero films. However, Infinity Castle‘s performance in China could be hindered by two key issues: its graphic content – including violence, sexuality, and rebellious themes – and the upcoming release of Zootopia 2.

The new animated film Zootopia 2 is a strong contender to beat Demon Slayer in the Chinese box office, having already earned over $216 million. Like Infinity Castle, Zootopia 2 is selling a lot of advance tickets in China. Both films will be released around the same time – Zootopia 2 on November 26th, during the third week of Infinity Castle’s run. However, recent disappointments with films like Superman (2025) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps suggest Zootopia 2 might not perform as well as expected, potentially giving Infinity Castle an easier path to success. This wouldn’t be surprising given the current market trends.

Despite the recent, somewhat surprising, confirmation of its release in China, the strong early ticket sales for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle are a positive sign for the series. If November’s numbers are any indication, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is poised to become the first anime film to earn over a billion dollars worldwide. This recent success of anime in the U.S. is definitely getting Hollywood’s attention.

The Demon Slayer Corps, including the Hashira, were undergoing intense training to prepare for their upcoming fight with Muzan Kibutsuji when he suddenly attacked the Ubuyashiki Mansion. Tanjiro and the Hashira raced to defend their leader, but Muzan trapped them in a strange, unknown place. They soon find themselves in the demons’ fortress, the Infinity Castle, setting the stage for the ultimate showdown between the Demon Slayers and Muzan’s forces.

You can now watch Demon Slayer Seasons 1 and 2, along with earlier movies and special episodes, on Crunchyroll.
