Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog, addressed speculations regarding their potential project following “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” hinting at the possibility of a third installment in “The Last of Us” series or a fifth entry in the “Uncharted” franchise.
In an interview with Variety, Druckmann expressed optimism about the success of Intergalactic and hinted at a possible sequel if it proves to be popular. However, he remained vague about whether Intergalactic 2 would be Naughty Dog’s next project immediately following its release, stating only that he keeps the possibility open.
Druckmann expressed his intention to take a moment to evaluate the progress and emotional state of the team once Intergalactic is completed, before considering the potential directions for the upcoming project.
“We have some other ideas that we’d like to explore as well,” Druckmann said.
As a devoted fan, I can share that during an interview, Neil Druckmann revealed Naughty Dog’s strongest creations emerge when the team passionately supports a specific project or vision, rather than simply producing another sequel out of obligation. To illustrate this point, he mentioned a time when the completion of The Last of Us II left the studio pondering whether to immediately proceed with The Last of Us 3. Druckmann explained that there was an extended phase where they brainstormed potential concepts for what could be included in such a game.
After completing The Last of Us 2, Druckmann mentioned that Naughty Dog considered venturing into other franchises they own, such as Uncharted and Jak and Daxter. Nevertheless, the team ultimately chose to work on Intergalactic, a project which resonated more with their interests and passions.
Regarding The Last of Us Part 3, Neal Druckmann has hinted at its potential existence. On the other hand, concerning the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog expressed that if they don’t create Uncharted 5 themselves, they would welcome another studio taking up the mantle to continue it.
The project titled “Intergalactic” is currently being developed, but as of now, there’s no set release date. An early-year report suggests that it might not be released until after 2027.
