Filmmaker Mira Nair perfectly captured her excitement about her son Zohran Mamdani’s election victory with three words: “Zohran you beauty.” She shared the message on Instagram the night he won the New York City mayoral race on November 4th. Nair, known for directing films like Mississippi Masala with Denzel Washington, celebrated with her son onstage at his election night party in Brooklyn. She even wore a bright yellow and blue outfit inspired by his campaign logo. During the campaign, Andrew Cuomo’s team frequently mentioned Nair, and a Cuomo staffer labeled Mamdani a “nepo baby” in a tweet on August 5th. Interestingly, Cuomo himself comes from a political family – his father, Mario, served as New York governor from 1983 to 1994.
At a party celebrating Mahmood Mamdani’s win, many well-known figures from Hollywood and other fields were in attendance. Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, a strong supporter of Mamdani and a previous target of criticism, was surrounded by reporters. Cynthia Nixon, who ran against Mamdani in the 2018 gubernatorial primary, was there with her Gilded Age co-star Morgan Spector, who had appeared in an ad endorsing Mamdani earlier in September. Jennifer Welch of the I’ve Had It podcast and Adam Friedland, a prominent voice in online progressive circles, were key in mobilizing support through podcasts. Other attendees included Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon’s Sex and the City co-star, comedians Aziz Ansari, Julio Torres, Kal Penn, and Mary Beth Barone, and student activist Mahmoud Khalil. As the DJ played classic songs like “Lean Back,” the crowd celebrated their new mayor.
