Netflix has given fans a first glimpse of its new murder mystery, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. The series is based on Christie’s 1929 novel and stars Mia McKenna-Bruce as the main character, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent.
Netflix released a short preview of its upcoming Agatha Christie series, giving fans their first glimpse of the lead detective played by Bruce. The preview features actors well-known for their work in mystery stories, such as Martin Freeman from Sherlock and Helena Bonham Carter, who starred in Enola Holmes.
Set in 1925, the story centers around a house party where a harmless prank turns deadly. A curious young detective named Bundle takes on the investigation, and the case will ultimately transform her life.
Chris Chibnall, known for shows like Broadchurch and Doctor Who, wrote and is executive producing a three-part mystery series coming out on January 15th. James Prichard, the great-grandson of Agatha Christie, is also executive producing through Agatha Christie Limited.
As a huge Agatha Christie fan, I was excited to see Netflix tackle Seven Dials. It’s only the second time this story has been adapted for the screen – the first was a TV movie way back in 1981, directed by Tony Wharmby. I looked up the original cast and it’s impressive – Cheryl Campbell played Blundle, and she was joined by legends like John Gielgud and Harry Andrews, alongside James Warwick and Lucy Gutteridge. It’s fascinating to see how different versions approach the same mystery!
Agatha Christie is a hugely popular mystery writer, often called the “Queen of Mystery” or the “Queen of Crime.” Many of her books have been made into films and TV shows, like the recent Hercule Poirot movies starring Kenneth Branagh.
While Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are Agatha Christie’s most famous creations, it’s understandable that Seven Dials hasn’t been adapted for screen very often. The book, published in 1929, didn’t receive great reviews initially, as readers were surprised by its different style compared to Christie’s usual novels.
Bundle first appeared in Agatha Christie’s 1925 novel, The Secret of Chimneys. She’s a young, fashionable woman – what people back then would have called an “it girl” – who longs for excitement and isn’t afraid to break the rules for her time.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials will premiere on Netflix on January 15.
