The author of Absolute Wonder Woman recently shared a new design for Zatanna, one of DC’s strongest magical characters. This preview shows what Zatanna will look like in the Absolute series and suggests she’ll be central to the story’s next phase.
Zatanna’s Absolute universe look revealed
On November 2, 2025, writer Kelly Thompson shared a first look at Zatanna’s costume for DC Comics’ Absolute Wonder Woman through a post on her Substack newsletter.
Hayden Sherman’s illustrations and Jordie Bellaire’s colors depict a new, darker look for the magician in the Absolute Universe. This reimagined costume appears in issues #14 and #16 of Absolute Wonder Woman, with issue #16 kicking off the “Season of the Witch” storyline in January 2026.
In a recent Substack post, Thompson revealed a redesigned Zatanna. The new look features her with curly black hair and green eyes, wearing a black outfit with blue gloves and visible magical energy.
Thompson announced that Wonder Woman will appear in Absolute Wonder Woman #14 this month and again in issue #16, which starts a new story arc called “Season of the Witch.” The cover for issue #16, illustrated by Sherman, features Zatanna in a dynamic pose, enveloped in swirling blue and white magical smoke.
As a longtime reader, I’ve been following Zatanna’s story as it connects to this larger ‘Absolute Universe’ storyline, and things are really heating up! We learned in the last issue of ‘Absolute Wonder Woman’ that Veronica Cale had Zatanna locked up in Area 41, basically silencing her magic. Now, the previews for the next issue reveal she’s being set free… with a mission to eliminate another witch! That puts her on a collision course with Wonder Woman, which is going to be an incredible showdown, I can already tell!
Absolute Wonder Woman #16 kicks off a new story arc called “Season of the Witch!” A dangerous new enemy appears in Gateway City, and surprisingly, the best way to defeat Wonder Woman is with another witch – Zatanna! This issue will drastically change Diana’s life.
