I’m so excited! Obsidian Entertainment, the team behind Pillars of Eternity, is making a huge update to the game – after 10 years, they’re adding a proper turn-based mode! As a big fan of Pillars of Eternity, I can’t wait to try it out – and we can all play with it this week!
Obsidian has announced that a public beta for turn-based combat in Pillars of Eternity will be available starting November 5th. This new mode was inspired by the combat system in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, and a trailer showcasing it has also been released.
Obsidian made these real-time improvements to the game based on feedback from players of Deadfire.
- Unbound Turns: All turns are now influenced by a character’s overall speed, improving the value of Real-Time with Pause attributes and mechanics.
 - Smarter Free Actions: Actions like swapping weapons, drinking potions, or enabling modals are now free actions. Each free action is limited to one per turn per type for balance.
 - Faster Pacing: Combat lethality has been significantly increased for both enemies and players to keep battles tense and impactful.
 - Mode Flexibility: You can choose Turn-Based Mode alongside difficulty when starting a new game — or swap freely between Real-Time with Pause and Turn-Based Mode in the game options. We’re also investigating a direct HUD toggle for even more convenience.

Players have the option to play with traditional turn-based combat, or they can switch between real-time and turn-based styles whenever they want. The current beta test doesn’t have a set end date, but the developers at Obsidian plan to release more updates and improvements before officially adding turn-based combat to the full game.
As a huge fan of the Pillars of Eternity series, I was really excited to hear Josh Sawyer talking about a potential Pillars 3! Apparently, if they do make it, he’s thinking of taking some cues from the incredible success of Baldur’s Gate 3. The biggest change? It sounds like they might ditch the classic isometric view and go for a more modern 3D style. It’s a big shift, but honestly, seeing what Larian Studios did with Baldur’s Gate 3, it makes a lot of sense!
Earlier this year, Obsidian Entertainment launched Avowed, a new action role-playing game set in the world of Pillars of Eternity.
