This car is surprisingly capable too. The owner shared that it’s a 2001 VW Passat wagon, making it just about a year older than the original PlayStation 2. In the video, you can clearly see the PS2 sitting on the passenger seat, with a cable running through the glove compartment. The controller is plugged in and resting on the center console. The owner then turns on the console and shows the opening screen for Need For Speed: Underground 2, which is sure to bring back memories for many viewers.
People on Reddit were amazed and envious. One commenter called it “genius” and compared it to creating a portable LAN party. Another praised the owner for maintaining the older car and successfully modifying a PlayStation 2. Many felt the setup perfectly captured the nostalgic feeling of gaming between 2001 and 2006.
Many commenters pointed out the similarity to a scene in the original The Fast and the Furious movie, where a character plays Gran Turismo in their car right before a race. It appears a YouTube clip of that scene motivated this Reddit user, and others, to try something similar.
I’m not qualified to say whether modifying a car like this is safe or legal. It’s likely a legal grey area, particularly if the screen could distract the driver, even if someone else is using it. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend doing this.
