A24’s upcoming fantasy film, 100 Nights of Hero, is generating buzz, and some are wondering if it could be a truly exceptional movie. Adapted from Isabel Greenberg’s graphic novel, the film initially received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—a rare feat that rarely lasts. But Julia Jackman’s movie seems to be an exception, maintaining a perfect score so far.
The film 100 Nights of Hero features Maika Monroe, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Galitzine, Charli XCX, Amir El-Masry, Richard E. Grant, and Felicity Jones. The story centers on Cherry (Monroe), a noblewoman whose husband, Jerome (El-Masry), wagers with a charming friend, Manfred (Galitzine), to see if she’ll remain faithful. Meanwhile, Cherry’s maid, Hero (Corrin), attempts to distract Manfred and protect Cherry.
Typically, a movie starting with a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes sees that score decrease as more reviews are published. However, “100 Nights of Hero” is different. Even though it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 6th, it didn’t have enough reviews to get a score until mid-October. Now, the number of reviews has almost doubled, increasing from 10 to 19.
As a total film buff, I’m still buzzing about 100 Nights of Hero – and unbelievably, it still has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! Everyone’s raving about how beautifully it’s made, like a real fairy tale, and the script is wonderfully strange and original. The acting is fantastic too. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian put it brilliantly, saying the film really plays with ideas of gender, sexuality, and power – it’s all very fluid. He also described it as a really sweet story that feels almost dreamlike and floats right off the screen, though he did note a shift towards something more serious as the story goes on.
Many critics point out the movie isn’t perfect, but believe it’s excellent if you appreciate this type of story and writing. As Damon Wise from Deadline Hollywood Daily puts it, the movie has a somewhat overly cute opening, but after that, it’s smooth sailing.
“100 Nights of Hero” is a unique fantasy film that will likely appeal to fans of offbeat stories and well-known actors in unusual roles. It’s releasing in theaters on December 5th, before the major Oscar-contending films come out around Christmas, giving it a chance to stand out before those movies get all the attention.
Despite not being a major highlight at the Venice film festival, ‘100 Nights of Hero’ is receiving consistently positive reviews, hinting it might be underestimated. The film has the potential to surprise audiences, building buzz through word-of-mouth and becoming a popular choice in theaters this December.
