There’s a forgotten Dexter prequel that you can watch now for free

The show Dexter has led to several spin-off TV series, and there’s also a lesser-known web series available to watch online without charge.

Dexter first aired on Showtime in 2006 and continued for eight seasons, totaling 96 episodes, before concluding in 2013.

The story of Dexter didn’t stop with the original series. It continued with follow-up shows like Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Resurrection, and even a prequel called Dexter: Original Sin.

This wasn’t the first time the character’s backstory was explored; an animated comic had already shown what his life was like when he was younger.

Dexter Early Cuts is available on YouTube

Dexter Early Cuts is a web series that launched in 2009, and was narrated by star Michael C. Hall.

So, each episode was like a quick dive – two or three minutes – into the life of someone young Dexter took out. It wasn’t just about the kill, though. They really showed why he did it, giving you the backstory on those slides he hides – you know, the ones behind the AC unit? It made everything a lot more understandable, seeing things from his perspective.

The first season was split into three parts. The initial four episodes followed Alex Timmons, a former marine who began committing murders for pleasure. Then, the next four episodes focused on the story of Gene Marshall, and the last four centered around Cindy Landon.

The show continued with two more seasons, airing in 2010 and 2012. Season 2 was named ‘Dark Echo,’ and Season 3 was called ‘All in the Family’.

Each season featured new stories created by different authors and artists, so the look and feel changed over time.

Showtime originally released these short films on YouTube to promote their TV series, and they’re still available there. While you’re waiting for the next installment of Resurrection, expected in 2026, you can enjoy all of the ‘Early Cuts’ videos right now.
