Ontario thief pulls off $80K whipped cream heist in the middle of the night

Guelph, Ontario police are looking into the theft of a refrigerated trailer containing $80,000 worth of whipped cream. The incident happened early in the morning on October 28th.

Guelph police say a manager reported a trailer stolen from a business on Speedvale Avenue West. Investigators believe someone hitched the white Wabash trailer to their vehicle and drove away around 4:30 a.m. with 30 pallets of Gay Lea whipped cream.

Police estimate the stolen goods are worth around $80,000, calling this theft unusual due to the type of cargo taken. Although they haven’t released any information about a suspect, the missing trailer has led to a broader search on highways throughout Ontario.

Whipped cream swiped clean

According to CityNews, the stolen whipped cream was transported in a refrigerated trailer and had serial numbers. It’s currently unknown if the cream has made its way into regular stores or is being sold illegally. Toronto Life points out that the large quantity of stolen goods indicates this wasn’t a simple act of theft, but likely a planned operation.

Whipped cream, like other dairy items, doesn’t last long, even when kept cold. Store-bought whipped cream usually stays good for three to four weeks if it’s consistently refrigerated at a temperature between 34–38°F (1–3°C). But if the refrigeration is interrupted or the temperature isn’t controlled, it can spoil quickly – sometimes in just a few hours – because bacteria grow faster. This means getting the stolen shipment back to proper refrigeration quickly is essential to preserve its value.

Investigators are asking anyone who knows something about the trailer or what was inside to get in touch with Guelph police, or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
