After almost five months since the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, a new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been announced. This update will allow the popular game to utilize the Switch 2’s improved hardware. However, even if you haven’t upgraded to the Switch 2, you can still enjoy a free update for the original Nintendo Switch version – and many fans will find this to be the most exciting part! This is the first major update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons since November 2021. Both the Switch 2 upgrade and the free update for the base game will be available on January 15th, 2026.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons finally gets a Switch 2 edition
Nintendo recently released a 12-minute video detailing the upcoming update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch 2. The update introduces mouse control support, allowing players to easily arrange decorations, design custom art, and write on the bulletin board. A new item, the Megaphone, utilizes the Switch 2’s microphone. Players can use it to call out to villagers, quickly locating them on their island.
The Switch 2 version will let up to 12 players hang out on the same island together, and they can all chat using a single voice call. However, everyone needs to be playing the Switch 2 version of the game for this to work. It might be tricky to get 12 friends all on the new system! Also, the Switch 2 version will have improved graphics, as you can see in the comparison image below.

While everyone is talking about the Switch 2, the biggest changes in this update are actually coming to the original Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch. Players will get to visit a new resort hotel managed by Kapp’n and his family. The trailer shows you’ll be decorating the hotel rooms with different themes to please your guests, and there will be plenty of new furniture and clothing to help with that. But there’s even more coming!

The latest update introduces a dream world where players can design up to three extra islands however they like! You can also share these dream islands with friends and villagers. Best of all, both this dream world feature and the Kapp’n Hotel update are completely free. For those who already own the game, upgrading to the Switch 2 version is available for just $4.99 – a great deal compared to other Switch 2 upgrades.
