Gundam fans can revisit the beginning of the classic story with the new Deluxe Editions from Vertical Comics. The first Deluxe Edition, released on August 12th, is currently available at a significant discount on Amazon – it’s marked down from $55 to just $31! This 880-page hardcover collects the first two volumes of the 12-volume series, which originally ran from 2001 to 2011. It’s a great value, as buying the original hardcover editions of ‘Activation’ and ‘Garma’ separately would cost around $45.
Deluxe 2 was released on October 7th and costs $46.56, down from its original price of $55. This edition of Gundam: The Origin collects two volumes of the story in each of six large, hardcover books. Vertical Comics will release a new book every two months, with the complete story expected to be available by next June.
You can now preorder Deluxe editions 3 through 6. Amazon offers a price guarantee, meaning you won’t be charged until your book is shipped, and they’ll automatically apply any discounts offered before the release date.
Okay, so imagine way in the future, humanity’s spread out across the solar system, living in these huge space colonies orbiting Earth. But things get tense between Earth’s government and the people living in those colonies. Eventually, a group called Zeon, basically a fascist regime, takes over a bunch of colonies and just declares war on Earth. And when I say war, I mean giant robots – these massive, humanoid machines called mobile suits – are fighting it out. It’s a crazy setup, but that’s the world of Mobile Suit Gundam!
When a Zeon squad attacks the space colony of Side 7, a young civilian named Amuro Ray unexpectedly finds himself piloting the Federation’s experimental mobile suit, the RX-78 Gundam, to protect the colony. The Federation recruits him, and he discovers he’s a Newtype – a person with enhanced reflexes and the ability to connect with other Newtypes. While this makes him a skilled fighter, Amuro struggles with the moral implications of war due to the increased empathy that comes with being a Newtype. Throughout the story, he also develops a long-lasting and intense rivalry with Char Aznable, Zeon’s top pilot, a conflict that is central to the entire Gundam saga and continues beyond the original series.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (Vol. 1-12)

The full 12-book series is currently available in excellent hardcover editions, so you can get the complete set right away if you don’t want to wait until June. Keep in mind these hardcovers are a bit smaller (6.29 x 8.3 inches), making them easier to carry around. Plus, they include special guest essays—removed from the Deluxe Editions—like one written by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

If you’d like to see where the manga’s story began, the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. Netflix has a trilogy of movies that combine the original anime episodes into longer films. But that’s just the beginning – the first Gundam series led to many sequels and spin-offs, including anime, manga, novels, and films.
If you’re a fan of the classic Mobile Suit Gundam, the recent movie Cucuruz Doan’s Island is available on Blu-ray at Amazon for $25.12, discounted from $40. Released in September 2024 and directed by Yasuhiko, the movie reimagines a well-known but often criticized episode from the original anime, which had issues with animation quality. This new version boasts completely updated animation, a more detailed story, and a new English voice cast. Good news for purists – Touru Furuya returns to voice Amuro Ray, just as he did in the original Japanese anime.
The manga Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin was adapted into a seven-episode animated series focusing on the backstory of Char Aznable, the main villain, before the One Year War. The first four episodes are available on Blu-ray as Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin: Chronicle of Char and Sayla, and episodes five through seven are on Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin: Chronicle Of The Loum Battlefield. However, the latter Blu-ray set is currently unavailable for purchase.

There have been many sequels and spin-offs based on the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and among them, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack stands out as the most significant. Released in 1988, this movie reunites the central characters, Amuro and Char, and finally resolves their decades-long conflict that began in the original anime series. You can find the Blu-ray version on Amazon for $33.
Char’s Counterattack is based on a novel by the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino, called Mobile Suit Gundam: High-Streamer. Tomino also wrote a second novel, Beltorchika’s Children, which came from an early draft of the movie’s script and was recently adapted into a seven-part manga series. Both stories share the same basic plot, but Beltorchika’s Children is closer to Tomino’s original ideas for this part of the Gundam universe. Notably, it includes two impressive mobile suit designs – the Zeon Nightengale and Amuro’s Hi-Nu Gundam – that didn’t make it into the final cut of the movie.
The English translation of the first three volumes of the manga Beltorchika’s Children came out between 2023 and 2024, and the remaining volumes will be released in the coming months. You can find the paperback version of Volume 1 at Crunchyroll, and Volumes 2 and 3 are available on Amazon. Volumes 4 and 5 are currently available for preorder on Amazon and will be released next year.
