Backbone is releasing a special Death Stranding 2-themed smartphone controller. Created with Kojima Productions and PlayStation, the limited-edition Backbone One will cost $160 and only 1,350 will be available. You can preorder one starting November 5th at Best Buy, the Kojima Productions Store, and Backbone’s website.
Inspired by the PlayStation Backbone One, this controller’s design takes cues from the upcoming game Death Stranding 2, giving it a look straight from the game’s world. It comes in a special, limited-edition, numbered Pelican case. The controller’s colors are pulled from the game’s landscapes, and it features clear windows that let you see the internal components.
The new Backbone One “Gen 2” controller has an improved D-pad and uses magnets to easily attach to your phone – even if it’s in a standard case. Connecting your Android or iPhone transforms it into a portable gaming console with all the buttons and controls you’d expect, including joysticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and triggers. When you’re finished playing, the controller folds up for convenient storage.
Backbone previously created a Death Stranding controller based on the Director’s Cut of the game. That controller gained notoriety not just for its design, but also for its color – a translucent yellow that many found reminiscent of bodily fluids.
The latest Backbone controller is expected to be popular and may quickly become unavailable. However, you can still purchase the existing models on Amazon in classic black and white. Both the USB-C version and the Lightning version of the Backbone One are currently priced at $100.
For a more high-end experience, you can get the Backbone Pro controller for $170. It’s been redesigned to be more comfortable to hold and uses better parts, including a grippy texture, quieter buttons, full-size analog sticks from ALPS, precise Hall Effect triggers, and two customizable buttons on the back.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach came out for PlayStation 5 earlier this year, and the creators, Kojima Productions, are still building on the game’s world. We recently got a sneak peek at a trailer for the upcoming Death Stranding anime, and a live-action movie directed by Michael Sarnoski and produced by A24 is also in the works, though it’s still in the beginning stages of production.
