The 2025 film “Safe House” is entirely separate from the 2012 action movie starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, despite sharing the same title. While both films are action thrillers, that’s where the similarities end. This new “Safe House” tells a completely different story, and director Jaimie Marshall delivers it in a concise 90-minute runtime.
Written by Leon Langford, “Safe House” is a fast-paced action thriller that, despite a few predictable plot points, keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s impressive how much the filmmakers achieved with a limited budget, and the actors all deliver solid performances, often bringing depth to their roles beyond what’s written in the script.

The movie begins in downtown Los Angeles with the Vice President’s motorcade heading to a gala at City Hall. Just blocks away from the event, the convoy is attacked with powerful explosives. Simultaneously, a bomb goes off in front of City Hall, releasing a dangerous chemical into the city. Amidst the chaos and gunfire, five federal agents rush to a secure safe house run by a man known only as Anderson (Lucien Laviscount).
Six main characters, with little prior connection to each other, are forced to take shelter together in a safe house alongside other agents they barely know. Along with Anderson, the group includes Special Agents Owens and Reeves from the Department of Defense, Agent Choi, who was part of the Vice President’s security team, the quick-tempered Agent Sorello from Homeland Security, and the experienced Agent Halton from Langley.
Still reeling from the recent attacks, six agents find themselves distrusting each other while trying to stay alive. Things get even harder when General Marshall (Brett Cullen) reveals the bomb used in the attack originated from their location. Convinced a member of the team is responsible, Marshall locks down the safe house, refusing to let anyone leave until they can identify the bomber.
As a movie fan, I was completely hooked by this film’s central premise: six rats trapped in a cage, battling both outside invaders and a potential mole within their ranks. It quickly became a pressure cooker of fear and suspicion. Each rat has such a strong personality and is keeping something hidden, which naturally leads to conflict. What’s really clever is how the movie puts us, the audience, in the position of investigator, constantly analyzing each character and trying to figure out who we can actually trust.

The movie balances its unfolding mystery with exciting action scenes as the terrorists try to break into the building. While these fast-paced shoot-outs and fights contain subtle clues, they primarily showcase impressive choreography and direction. Director Marshall’s sharp vision, combined with the skilled camera work of Michael Merriman, creates an intense and thrilling experience.
The main weakness of “Safe House” lies in its predictable plot twist. The reveal of who’s behind everything isn’t surprising, and it leads to a rushed, disappointing ending, complete with a setup for another movie. However, this weak ending doesn’t ruin the film entirely. Director Marshall does a good job of building tension throughout, constantly moving the story forward and increasing the stakes. The combination of escalating suspense and exciting action sequences makes “Safe House” an enjoyable experience.
