New dark action RPG draws from the most brutal installments of God of War. Loulan: The Cursed Sand is created with Sony’s support

Chinese culture is increasingly influencing popular shows and movies, and entertainment companies are taking notice. ChillyRoom Studio recently announced Loulan: The Cursed Sand, an action role-playing game that draws inspiration from the early God of War games. The game will be available on PC and PlayStation 5 and is being developed with support from Sony.

The game is set along the historic Silk Road in western China. You’ll play as the Cursed Sand, the main character, who was once a member of the royal guard but has been resurrected. Now a skeletal warrior, he embarks on a journey to find the princess he loves.

Throughout the game, the hero will battle many enemies and powerful bosses, using skillful blocking and shape-shifting abilities. He can transform into Sand form for versatile combat and Bone form to deal heavy damage to multiple foes. His unique powers aren’t just for fighting – they’ll also help him solve puzzles and create interesting moments in the game.

The game will be shown from a camera angle similar to the original God of War titles, positioned high above the character. It’s designed to feel like classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s, but with updated technology and features.

Currently, a team of 16 people is developing the game. This team includes developers who have previously worked at well-known studios like Santa Monica, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames. Sony Interactive Entertainment is overseeing the entire project and supporting the creators through its China Hero Project, which helps Chinese game developers with the entire process – from development to publishing and marketing.
