Konami is having a great run, especially with the success of Metal Gear Solid Delta and as they finish up the Master Collection Vol. 2. Fans are eagerly awaiting news about the Metal Gear Solid 1 remake. That’s why it was so surprising to learn that Konami actually declined the opportunity to develop a Matrix game in the late 1990s. The story quickly went viral, and now Hideo Kojima is sharing his side of what happened.
We never got a Matrix game by Kojima, but I say it’s never too late
In August 1999, the creators of The Matrix approached Konami with a proposal for a video game, but they were firmly rejected. While Enter the Matrix eventually came out in 2003, developed by Shiny Entertainment, it’s fun to think about what Hideo Kojima could have done with a full-fledged Matrix game – the possibilities are incredible.
Surprisingly, Kojima wasn’t aware of the offer at all. The Konami CEO was the one who met with the Wachowskis and ultimately turned it down. He recently explained the whole situation on X, sharing his side of the story.

Kojima was surprised to learn through social media that the Wachowskis had offered him the chance to work on a Matrix game back in 1999, as this had never been discussed with him directly. Although he’d met them several times during their promotional visits to Japan, including once at Konami, a game collaboration never came up. He was deeply involved with Metal Gear Solid 2 at the time, but he thinks they could have potentially made it happen if he’d known about the offer.
I always found the story about the quick dismissal of a Matrix game idea a little strange, particularly knowing how much Hideo Kojima loves the movie. He actually discusses its influence on him in his book, The Creative Gene. Many people commenting on his recent post agree that it’s not too late for him to explore making a Matrix game, even after all these years. The possibilities with today’s technology are exciting, and fans really deserve a truly great Matrix game – it could still happen!
