Ys vs. Trails in the Sky gets 4K 60fps support on Switch 2 in new update, patch notes & remaster blog revealed

refint/games released update 1.0.1 for Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga on Nintendo Switch, adding visual improvements for the Switch 2 console. They’ve also shared a new blog post on Steam detailing the third round of remaster features, building on the previous two updates.

I’m so excited! I just read that refint/games is reporting the Switch version of the game will be able to run at 4K at 60fps when docked and 1080p at 60fps handheld on the new Nintendo Switch 2. It’s awesome that even though it’s not a brand new game made for the Switch 2, it’ll still look and play so much better through backwards compatibility!

I’ll be checking out the update and how well the Switch version works with older Ys Switch 2 games soon.

Full patch notes for today’s update are now available. You can find them below:

A new update is now available for Ys vs. Trails in the Sky on all systems. Here’s what’s changed:

  • Adjusted an animation for the skill Draguna Edge (Agate).
  • Fixed some flickering effects.
  • Fixed some connection inconsistencies on LAN Mode.
  • PC: Fixed a bug that caused wallpapers to be rendered incorrectly on certain resolutions.
  • Nintendo Switch: Implemented various fixes and additional QoL features, some of them already present on other platforms: Message log, expanded training mode options, music-player mode and BGM Info Display. The full patch notes for Switch are below.
  • Nintendo Switch: Resolution is enhanced depending on the console model’s available performance.

The Nintendo Switch-specific patch notes are below

This update includes several improvements and bug fixes. We’ve refined translations and text alignment throughout the game. Players can now access a message log during story sequences by pressing the up direction on the controller, and BGM information is now displayed. Subtitles have been added to the ending movies, and three new achievements are available in the Record menu. We’ve also added support for HD rumble on PS5 and a master volume setting.

Visuals have been enhanced with improved brightness and transparency for certain objects and effects. We’ve corrected the positioning of story portraits and fixed stuttering in story mode animations, as well as issues with darkened textures. English voice lines that weren’t playing correctly have been fixed.

We’ve addressed several control-related bugs, including inverted controls with single Joy-Cons and unintended player sits. Flickering effects have been resolved, and an issue causing random inputs from disconnected controllers has been fixed. Finally, this update includes a variety of other minor bug fixes and improvements to enhance the overall experience.

Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga is now released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.

The refint/games team has shared a new, in-depth Steam blog post detailing the third round of improvements coming with the release. You can read it here:

Message Log Feature

If you need a refresher on the story, you can quickly catch up during cutscenes. By pressing the “Up” button (usually W on keyboard or the D-Pad Up on a controller), a Message Log will appear. This log lets you review the entire story from the beginning and even replay each voice line. This feature, common in recent Falcom games, is a welcome addition.

BGM Info Display

We’ve brought back a popular feature: a small pop-up window that displays information about the currently playing song. You can choose to have it appear every time a song starts, or just the first time you hear it. With so many songs in the game, this is a great way to keep track of your favorites. It’s also useful for discovering new tracks you might want to purchase for your Material Collection.

Extra Training Mode options

We’ve made a few improvements to training mode to help players better understand how moves work and offer more options for practice. Now, pressing a specific button combination (the Skill Combo button plus the Camera Toggle – R + Select by default) will reset the characters to their starting positions. We think these changes will be especially helpful for players who enjoy mastering the game’s mechanics!

Rich Presence

Hey everyone, I’m excited to share that the game now shows what I’m up to right in my status on platforms like Steam! It even adds info to my game recordings on Steam Timeline. So, my friends can see exactly what stage and character I’m rocking. If you’d rather keep things private, no worries – you can easily turn this off in the options menu. We’re also working on getting this working with Discord soon, and we’re planning to add even more detail about what’s happening in my games in future updates!

Other additions

Before we finish up, here are a few final updates. Some of these changes work across all platforms, while others are unique to specific ones.

  • The game’s interface was originally designed with a large size for the PSP’s smaller screen. Now, on modern, larger screens, the interface defaults to a smaller size to create more play space. You can further reduce the size by selecting “Small,” or choose “Large” to match the original PSP scale. This setting only applies when playing with one player, as more screen space is needed to show each player’s abilities in multiplayer.

  • Although you likely won’t notice it directly, we’ve improved how textures are compressed using a faster method called LZ4. This saves about 400MB of installation space. We didn’t need a complex packaging system for this update, and the console versions already have their own built-in compression to further reduce file sizes for each platform.

  • The game now features Steam achievements that correspond to the original in-game achievements. Each achievement also has its own unique artwork, so be sure to check them out!

Conclusion

That concludes our look at the remastered features! We hope this series has added even more enjoyment to the fantastic celebration of Falcom’s work.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this remaster. That includes our dedicated internal team, our helpful beta testers, the community members who consistently shared their thoughts, and the content creators who covered our work. Your support and excitement meant the world to us throughout the entire process.

We believe these improvements have created the best version of the game. It’s been a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience working on this project from start to finish, and we’re excited to continue polishing it with future updates.

See you next time,

Adrian Graber – Producer & Lead Developer @ refint/games
