Game Boy Coding Adventure Sounds Like A Cool Book For Hobbyist Retro Devs

Fans of the classic Game Boy and those who enjoy coding have a new resource available. “Game Boy Coding Adventure,” published by No Starch Press, is a comprehensive guide—over 450 pages long—that teaches you how to create games for the original Game Boy. Unlike other tutorials that use modern tools, this book focuses on coding directly in assembly language, mirroring the techniques used by game developers in the early 1990s.

Game Boy Coding Adventure is available for $50 in paperback and $35 on Kindle.

No Starch Press offers a diverse collection of books covering programming and game development. They’re well known for titles like ‘Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python,’ a popular guide for aspiring game creators, and ‘Mission Python,’ which helps teens build space adventure games. The publisher also caters to specialized interests with books on tools like Twine and PuzzleScript for creating interactive stories and puzzle-platformers. Plus, they have a complete series dedicated to Scratch, the user-friendly, block-based programming language developed by MIT.

If you’re a Game Boy enthusiast, two more books you might want to check out are The Game Boy Encyclopedia and The History of the Game Boy. The Game Boy Encyclopedia, by Chris Scullion, details every game released for the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color in North America and Europe. The hardcover version is currently on sale at Amazon for $24, down from $43. The History of the Game Boy, written by Florent Gorges, offers an inside look at the console’s development and lifespan from 1989 to 1998. Based on interviews with the Game Boy’s creators, this thoroughly researched book was first published in English last September, alongside a history of the Famicom/NES.

If you’re interested in the NES, a book teaching the 6502 Assembler language for the 8-bit console came out last year. You can find “Classic Game Programming on the NES” at Amazon for $40.47, discounted from $50. Another option is the “Code the Classics” series, which shows you how to create retro games using Python and Pygame Zero. Volume 1 teaches game development inspired by games from the 1970s and early 1980s, while Volume 2 focuses specifically on 1980s games. Both volumes have Second Editions published by Raspberry Pi Press from last summer. Overall, Code the Classics provides a practical introduction to Python and Pygame Zero game development.
