Key Takeaways
Why is ETHZilla dumping its ETH holdings?
Apparently, to give its mNAV a nice little boost and avoid too much share dilution – because nothing says ‘smart move’ like selling $40 million worth of your café latte, I mean ETH, in one go, right? The CEO claims it’s all about making the shares look less crowded and more glamorous.
Will it affect Ethereum’s value?
If other Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs, fancy term for crypto hoarders) decide to follow ETHZilla’s charismatic lead and dump their ETH at a discount, then yes, the whole Ethereum circus might take a hit. But hey, who likes a market where everyone’s trying to offload their bags faster than you can say “buy the dip?”
ETHZilla-by some divine miracle, the seventh-largest ETH DAT-announced it’s cashing out a cool $40 million of ETH to buy back its own shares. Because nothing Paris Hilton ever did was as fashionable as a share buyback, apparently.
McAndrew Rudisill, the gentleman at the helm, said this move would help reduce share dilution and slick up their net asset value (NAV). Because when in doubt, buy back your own shares and make everyone think you’re a genius.
“By opportunistically repurchasing shares while our stock is trading below NAV, we plan to reduce the number of shares available for stock loan/borrow activity, while increasing the NAV per share of the Company.” – probably to impress the other crypto execs at their yacht parties

The firm also boasted a $250 million share buyback program funded by, you guessed it, selling their ETH stash. It’s a bit like selling your vintage comic books to buy more vintage comic books-only with more blockchain and fewer comic books.
Post-announcement, ETHZilla’s stock did a little jig, rallying 14.5%, closing at $20.65 on October 27th. After hours? Another 14%, pushing it to $23.50, because what’s a good market move without some extra drama?
Is the DAT sell-off bad for ETH?
Ah, a question as old as “should I buy that dip?” The answer, according to Charles Edwards, founder of crypto VC Capriole Investments, is: maybe. Just maybe, “bad” is too simple a term. The sell-off of ETH to fund buybacks might threaten Ethereum’s kingdom, like a poorly planned medieval siege.

He pointed out that DATs trading below their NAV have two options: either accept a buyout from a peer or climb aboard the debt train. Neither sounds very enticing, but apparently, it’s the only options if they want to keep the dream alive.
The market-to-net-asset-value ratio (fancy finance speak for ‘how much are we actually worth compared to our assets’) lets DATs raise money and grab more ETH if it’s trading at a premium. Not exactly the case these days – most DATs are flirting with discounts, including ETHZilla. Talk about bad timing.

Picture this: Bit Digital with an mNAV of 2, while MinBine and GameSquare are balding at 1.0. Most others? Below 1.0, which in finance-speak means “we’re probably in trouble, but let’s pretend everything’s fine.”
If ETH DATs keep selling off in the ETHZilla way, ETH’s price could be held hostage by a gang of over-leveraged, discount-hunting treasure chests. And unless ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds – the big kids in the playground) step in to soak up some of that sell pressure, the market might start to wobble.
ETH price stalls at $4.2k
Despite bouncing back from a rough week-up 12% from a measly $3.7k-the bulls hit a wall at $4,200. That level’s become a sort of short-term ‘no-go zone.’ Break through that? Maybe, then we can aim for a shiny new $4,800. Or, if things go awry, a revisit to the good old $3,800 support – just like your favorite rollercoaster, only with fewer screams and more charts.
