Duet Night Abyss has overhauled how character strength is determined. They’ve moved away from a system based on luck and individual character stats (like in the Beta) to one where characters are generally balanced in terms of damage output. While most characters are now fairly equal, some still excel in specific roles – like leading the team or supporting from the sidelines. Here’s my tier list for Duet Night Abyss characters.
Duet Night Abyss Character Tier List
This Duet Night Abyss tier list ranks the best characters based on two roles and two key factors. First, we’ll look at how well a character performs as your main damage dealer, both for quickly clearing levels and defeating bosses. Second, we’ll evaluate how useful a character is as an AI companion, providing additional damage, healing, buffs, and debuffs. You’ll find a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind each character’s ranking for both roles below.
Here are a couple of notes about the character rankings. First, Fina, Zhiliu, Fushu, Yuming, Kezhou, and Hilda will be released in the future. I haven’t ranked them yet because their abilities in the test version might change significantly by the time the full game comes out. However, early testing showed Hilda, Yuming, and Zhiliu dealing very high damage to both single targets and groups of enemies.
Second, characters in the S and A tiers have the most useful abilities for dealing high damage, whether you’re fighting bosses or clearing out large groups. B-tier characters usually have specific strengths or focus on certain areas, but aren’t as well-rounded. C-tier characters are a little weaker or harder for the game’s AI to play effectively. Finally, there isn’t a D-tier because even the less powerful characters are still viable thanks to the game’s overall power system, similar to Warframe.
Best Duet Night Abyss Character Rankings Explained
| Character | Progression/Bosses Main Character Ranking |
AI Companion/Support Ranking |
|---|---|---|
![]() Psyche |
S-Tier• One of the best characters in the game for raw progression and boss DPS if you play her well because you can use HP during ult instead of Sanity as a resource • This isn’t that dangerous since you can fly so you just need to learn to kite enemies while airborne plus you get sustain/def from Intron 1 and 4 • Kiting is also easier due to your innate enemy slow from your skill so you can kill bosses quite easily • She also scales really well with CRIT by gaining buffs on CRITs from the passive |
S/A+ Tier• This depends on the AI because if the AI plays well around her HP resource without dying by poor kiting she’s an S companion • Otherwise she’s A so it all depends on the AI gods and how well they play Psyche since she’s not a straightforward DPS |
![]() Lynn |
S-Tier• Similar to Psyche where Lynn can deal top-tier DPS but requires risk and practice since most of the DPS comes from Ult which makes you immobile • You need to learn to position well before Ult which deals insane damage but you cannot move so find high ground or ensure there are no enemies behind you before you ult • You want to channel ult safely as it drastically boosts attack speed until you run out of Sanity • The Laceration from your skill can deal great damage too, you just need to focus on ranged weapon damage with your companions so that you can stack it up as much as possible |
S-Tier• The Deadly Blossom is great for supports because it scales with ranged weapon damage taken so you can stack it up once your companion uses it • She’s a bit safer than Psyche to have as a companion since the DPS comes in a more straightforward way without having to kite so I would say Lynn is slightly better than Psyche as a companion |
![]() Lady Nifle |
A-Tier• Nifle is all about Attack debuffs with Solar and slows with Lunar to kite enemies and deal respectable DPS which makes her really good at bosses but okay for progression since you don’t want to be debuff-focused as a main character thus sacrificing DPS for grinding • Still for bosses this is quite useful and the DPS tradeoff isn’t that high because your Ult allows you to spam Solar and Lunar while boosting Skill Damage from overcapping Skill Range so she’s still A-Tier as main |
S-Tier• She’s a much better companion due to her debuffs and the AI cannot mess up her rotations like with Psyche and sometimes Lynn so she’s a perfect debuff support |
![]() Phantasio |
S-Tier• Phantasio is really good for both progression and bosses but you have to learn to trigger his Fermata to detonate Adaigo stacks for a DMG up and max DPS on bosses • You basic rotation is using Recitativo to stack Adaigo up to 10 then enter Bestial Fury with ult and doing a 4-hit Furious Claw combined with a jump into Plunging Attack triggering Fermata for a massive DMG buffs, Sanity refill and Immersion • The 3-hit combo with the beam in ult can also be good in certain situations where you need more range but I would capitalize on the 4-hit+plunging into Fermata to make the most of your DPS until Sanity runs out |
A-Tier• Phantasio would be S-Tier on Support for DPS if the AI would reliably trigger Duo or Fermata based on the sitatuion’s optimal combo but sadly it doesn’t do that • It’s still able to put out great off-DPS so Phantasio is still a great support for damage but the AI definitely doesn’t make the most of him |
![]() Daphne |
C-Tier• Daphne’s DPS isn’t that bad it’s just that her kit is better for a Support/Companion slot • Her Acoth Projectiles boost Trigger Probability so you can still do some decent damage • I just prefer her as a companion |
S-Tier• This is where Daphne shines since she’s arguably the best Companion for late-game bosses • Not only does Emerald Effusion heal in an AOE but it also slows enemies • Plus, you get her burst heal ult which boosts Attack and debuffs enemy Attack with a nice little DoT effect • IMO the best boss support |
![]() Hellfire |
B-Tier• Hellfire has a really strong kit focused on tanking damage and team defense • While it can be decent and fun to taunt enemies as a main and have your companions do the brunt of the DPS I feel like she’s a much better companion • For progression she’s probably A or S since she has a ton of AOE damage with the Skill and Ult for clearing groups but for bosses her DPS is lacking so it’s better if she’s a support than a main |
S-Tier• One of the best supports in the game due to her Ultimate which taunts all enemies so they focus her • This does two things with first allowing you to perform your difficult combos with mains like Psyche, Lynn or Phantasio that are difficult while you carry aggro • Second, the more enemies focus Hellfire the more she heals with passive and the more DPS she deals with her skill |
![]() Yale & Oliver |
A-Tier• Can stack up a lot of bombs and mines for massive Pyro damage clearing for both groups and bosses • That said Y&O require a human hand to place and arrange everything so that it can boom in a crescendo that the AI doesn’t do as optimally so this |
C-Tier• See the second point to the left |
![]() Truffle & Filbert |
B-Tier• Truffle and Filbert are more support-oriented but unlike Daphne they can still output decent damage in progression and bosses due to the AOE damage from the skill and ultimate • You also get a lot of mobility • That said, the debuff where you can’t use your weapon during Ult slightly hurts your overall DPS |
S-Tier• Truffle and Filbert are a great companion to draw damage away from your main character and tank a bit themselves with the damage reduction passive • That said the various buffs from the skill and ultimate as well as the Attack boost from Intron 2 make T&F a better companion |
![]() Sibylle |
A-Tier• Sibylle is in an awkward position because her skill hits random enemies and you also have to generate a lot of Might and Thunder stacks from Bonus Effect for her ultimate to deal a lot of AOE damage • That said if you can maximize Bonus Effect and make sure her skill hits only the boss she can have impressive DPS • Otherwise in the late-game it can get really tough to hit the right enemies with the skill and stack Bonus Effect for generating Might of Thunder • The late-game trick is to use her empowered Might of Thunder stacked Ultimate only for groups to link them and deal AOE damage and her empowered Might of Thunder stacked skill only for isolated bosses to deal heavy single target dmg |
C-Tier• AI Companions just can’t make the decision described on the left to maximize Might of Thunder empowerment for the skill and ultimate at the right times since the skill needs to be stacked and used on groups and the ult stacked and used on isolated bosses • I wouldn’t bring Sibylle as a companion EVER |
![]() Berenica |
A-Tier• Berenica used to be one of the most powerful DPS characters in the game in the Gacha days before Star ratings got removed • That said even with the nerfs I strongly believe she’s still really viable as a main DPS carry • Her main AOE and boss killer damage comes from outputting the most Swordwaves during ult before you lose Sanity for massive DPS • Boosting Trigger Probability to trigger her passive as much as possible is the way to go since her passive can restore Sanity making your ult longer • The Afterburn passive upgrade is also amazing to ignore Fairlight Sanity consumption and even the Intron 1 upgrade goes a long way to boost her ult |
C-Tier• To get Berenica to do similar DPS from the playtests you have to manage Sanity use as much as possible and AI Companions don’t have that kind of mechanical optimality which means that in their hands Berenica is just a low-Tier DPS so go with something else |
![]() Randy |
B-Tier• Randy is a shield support first and DPS second • His DPS simply isn’t as high as the A and S-Tiers but you can still get some mileage out of him for AOE damage clear and he’s good against bosses as a main character in the sense that you can tank them well but I recommend using him as a companion |
A-Tier• The reason he’s better as a companion is that he can place down his Barrier to block projectiles for you as you focus on DPS and playing around his barrier • He’ll also grant you shields with his ultimate and deal some nice off-DPS making him a much better companion option than main character |
![]() Rhythm |
B-Tier• Rhythm does a little bit of everything but doesn’t necessarily excel in either DPS nor support so the middle tier B is best for her • She’s all about movement with both her skill being excellent mobility and her ult pulling and pushing foes which honestly doesn’t do too much unless you have a companion who does a lot of AOE damage so that you can group enemies • Still Rhythm’s DPS is decent if you stack her charges which also stack by themselves from Sanity expenditure due to her passive |
B-Tier• Can be a useful companion for off-DPS and displacing enemies to put them into AOE damage areas or peel for you |
![]() Rebecca |
C-Tier• Rebecca is a damage-over-time DPS stacking poisons with her attacks and summons from her skill which you can then detonate with Ult to deal massive AOE damage and also spread stacks on kills via her Passive • This creates a really strong farming/progression playstyle for nuking crowds of enemies but isn’t the best against bosses since you need more single-target DPS since Rebecca specializes in groups |
A-Tier• If you pick a boss killer DPS like Psyche or Lynn then Rebecca is the perfect companion to give you some DoT and wave clear |
![]() Tabethe |
B-Tier• Tabethe is the opposite of Rebecca as she is better against bosses but not as good against crowds during farming • The goal is to Crit and use Ultimate to spawn a bunch of tentacles and then spam Skill to make them attack and buff allies • A great main hero character for killing bosses since all tentacles can focus on a boss but also works really well as a support due to the Skill damage buff |
A-Tier• Her skill gives your team a damage buff in the form of extra Hydro damage on attacks • Tabethe is also quite simple to play well so she’s a great DPS companion for killing bosses with her tentacles |
![]() Outsider |
C-Tier• Outsider is all about his Ultimate to enter a state of increased attack speed and tanking via shields since you can’t heal while it’s on • Plus you get a really strong defensive option with the Stealthy Prowl to exit danger when low on HP due to the ultimate • Overall your damage isn’t that great even with the Malise boost from Ultimate • I’d rather have had the ultimate still take HP but grant extra damage or even more attack speed instead of shields so that you can kite and damage groups and bosses or even having stealth not interupt your ultimate and give you Crit damage • Just not that organic of a playstyle with a low ceiling for high-tier DPS but quite a safe character to play due to Stealth |
B-Tier• Nothing special here, just an off-DPS that’s better than some niche options that the AI cannot play well |
![]() Margie |
C-Tier• Margie’s gimmick is stacking Jackpot through nearby item pickups and then detonating them with your Ultimate for increasingly higher AOE damage depending on how much Jackpot you’ve stacked up • This can be quite decent for farming but isn’t really that good for late game modes and bosses |
B-Tier• Similar to Outside Margie is a simple character for an AI to play and give you some decent off-DPS in terms of AOE damage so you can’t really go wrong with her but there are better options |
Duet Night Abyss FAQ
What are the best DPS characters for boss battles in Duet Night Abyss?
I suggest Psyche for dealing damage while prioritizing her health, Lynn for powerful, quick bursts of damage with her Ultimate ability, and Phantasio for consistently high damage through combos.
Those options are all good, but Yale and Oliver excel at quickly defeating groups of enemies, and Rebecca’s ultimate ability also deals significant area-of-effect damage.
Okay, so about my AI companions, here’s what I’ve figured out. Daphne is the queen of healing, hands down. Hellfire is awesome because he can grab a boss’s attention, letting me get out of danger. Lady Nifle is really good at weakening enemies with her debuffs. And honestly, any of the damage-dealing companions I mentioned earlier work great for just adding extra damage to a fight.
I tested out several characters who will be playable in the full game: Fina will be available on November 25th, Zhiliu, Fushu, Yuming, and Kezhou will come with Version 1.1, and Hilda will be added in a future update.
