The characters were haunted by past defeats, which led Marvel right back to a familiar enemy. However, it wasn’t really a failure at all – it was a clever and exciting way to announce the return of Thanos, a dangerous supervillain, in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. He’s set to threaten the universe once again.
Josh Brolin may return as Thanos, the powerful villain from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, in a major film expected in Winter 2026, according to industry source My Time to Shine.
Someone with inside knowledge commented on a post on X (formerly Twitter). The post featured a GIF from the Avengers movie showing Thanos disintegrating after Iron Man used the Infinity Gauntlet. The insider’s comment was very direct and had only one possible meaning.
“He will officially come back soon.”
This development dramatically increases the unpredictability of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s impossible to know how Thanos will fit into a story already building towards a huge gathering of heroes and villains from across the multiverse. While a rematch between Thanos and Scarlet Witch is possible, a different, more obvious conflict is emerging that could be explosive when the movie releases next December.
Oh Snap! Thanos vs. Downey, Again?
Thanos has come back to life before, so a resurrection wouldn’t be entirely new. In fact, Avengers: Endgame featured a version of him – an earlier iteration brought to the present – who fought Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.). Interestingly, Downey Jr. now plays Victor von Doom, also known as Dr. Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday.
Josh Brolin and Robert Downey Jr. have a unique rivalry on screen. If their characters, Thanos and Iron Man, were to face off against Doctor Doom, even Thanos would have to try and defeat him. Their previous encounters are evenly matched: Thanos won their first battle on Titan, but Iron Man ultimately erased Thanos from existence in Avengers: Endgame, though it cost him his life.
It’s also possible the villains will join forces, and if they do, the heroes will need a lot of help. That likely means bringing in powerful teams like the Fantastic Four, and possibly even mutant groups led by Magneto or the X-Men. The MCU could go in any direction, and rumors suggest this upcoming movie will be the most ambitious superhero film ever made – something only Thanos could previously claim.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide in December 2026.
