Laurence Fishburne surprised many fans when he said he’d be interested in playing Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he recently shared his reasons for believing he’d be a great choice for the role.
Why does Laurence Fishburne want to play Professor X?
In an interview with ComicBook, Laurence Fishburne explained his interest in playing Professor X stems from his lifelong passion for Marvel – from the comics he enjoyed as a kid to the current films.
Laurence Fishburne is a lifelong Marvel fan. He grew up reading Marvel comics in New York City and felt a strong connection to the stories and characters, seeing reflections of his own life in the pages. While he always hoped to play a Marvel character when he was younger, he’s very happy with the casting choices and how the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have turned out, and considers himself a big fan of the films.
Besides being a Marvel fan, Fishburne playfully suggested his age would make him a great Professor X, pointing out he’s taken on similar roles in the past.
He explained that Professor X currently feels like the right role for him, considering his age and the types of characters he usually plays. He believes it’s a good fit.
Laurence Fishburne isn’t the only actor interested in joining an X-Men project. Bryan Cranston has mentioned wanting to play Mister Sinister, and Giancarlo Esposito has also said he’d like to portray Professor X if given the chance.
