A surprising thriller from the actor’s long career is currently gaining popularity on streaming services. While they’ve appeared in several well-regarded movies, this one seems to be really connecting with audiences.
According to Flix Patrol, the 2001 thriller Don’t Say a Word is now sixth on Netflix’s global list of most-watched movies, and fifth in the US. Currently, it’s just behind the new movie Caramelo, while The Perfect Neighbor remains at the top of the list in first and second place.
Gary Fleder directed the film Don’t Say a Word, which was written by Anthony Peckham and Patrick Smith Kelly. The screenplay is based on Andrew Klavan’s 1991 novel of the same name. The movie stars Michael Douglas as Nathan Conrad, a child psychologist whose family life is disrupted when his old coworker, Dr. Louis Sachs, asks him to evaluate a troubled young woman named Elisabeth.
Nathan’s peaceful stay at the sanatorium quickly turns dangerous when Patrick Koster and his team of jewel thieves target his family. They’re desperate to get information from Elisabeth, and they’ll do anything – including threatening Nathan’s loved ones – to force him to cooperate.
As a movie fan, I always get excited when a thriller like Don’t Say a Word brings together such a great cast. You’ve got Oliver Platt playing Dr. Louis Sachs, the always-reliable Sean Bean as Patrick Koster, and Famke Janssen as Aggie Conrad. Plus, it was really interesting seeing Skye McCole Bartusiak as Jessie Conrad. It also felt like a significant moment for…
I was really glad to see Don’t Say a Word actually do well with moviegoers – it made back twice its $50 million cost in theaters, which is always a good sign! Sadly, critics weren’t as impressed. It currently has a pretty low score on Rotten Tomatoes – only 23% based on 113 reviews – and even audiences are only giving it a 49% rating. It’s a shame, because I enjoyed it!
What the Future (Might) Hold for Michael Douglas
In July, the actor explained that after battling cancer, he didn’t want to risk his health by continuing to work. Having worked consistently for nearly six decades, he didn’t want to die on set. While he doesn’t consider himself fully retired – he’d consider a special project – he doesn’t plan to return to regular work.
This aligns with previous comments from Douglas, where he’s mentioned wanting to explore horror projects, but not necessarily a full return to acting. He’s recently known for playing Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Avengers: Endgame and all three Ant-Man films.
Don’t Say a Word is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
