Did Elon Musk model his AI chatbot on his ex? Grimes’ new music video fuels speculation

Fans believe Elon Musk based his AI chatbot, Ani, on his ex-girlfriend, Grimes, after watching the music video for her new song, ‘Artificial Angels.’

In June, Elon Musk introduced Ani, his new AI chatbot. People quickly noticed similarities between Ani and several well-known women, both in real life and from fiction, suggesting she may have been inspired by figures like Grimes or Misa Amane from the anime Death Note.

Claire Elise Boucher, known professionally as Grimes, and Elon Musk were together for several years and share three children. Their relationship ultimately ended badly, leading to disagreements over how to care for their children.

Grimes debuted the music video for ‘Artificial Angels’ on October 20th, and many fans think it hints that the character Ani was inspired by a Canadian artist.

Grimes’ new song has fans convinced Elon Musk designed Ani off her

The music video is full of references to video games and online streaming, and prominently features Ani. One scene even shows Grimes dancing with the AI chatbot.

Towards the end of the video, there’s also a scene where Grimes transforms into Ani.

Adding to the mystery, Elon Musk had stopped following Grimes on X just one day before her new music video came out.

A fan wondered if Elon Musk unfollowed Grimes again because she subtly admitted their daughter, Ani, was based on her own image.

Someone exclaimed they’d suspected the character Ani was inspired by Grimes. Another commenter then thanked Elon Musk, jokingly suggesting he’s completely captivated by Grimes and that she’s brilliantly using his infatuation to create amazing work – calling it a perfect example of artistic skill.

Someone excitedly shared that Grimes hinted Elon Musk’s AI project, ANI, is connected to her in some way. They also noted Grimes appeared very affectionate towards Elon and was under his security’s protection, suggesting a possible ‘test’ involving a deepfake video and song.

Like any music, her songs and videos are open to interpretation, and the artist may not explicitly explain the meaning behind her frequent references to ‘Ani’.

However, the early comparisons between Ani and Misa Amane from Death Note might be accurate. Grimes’s 2002 song ‘Shinigami Eyes’ shows she’s a big fan of the manga.

Grimes’ Artificial Angels isn’t her only recent project to get attention. The 37-year-old also caused a stir when she unveiled the cover art for her new album. It included references to Charlie Kirk, a political activist and online personality, and even featured a meme coin created as a memorial.

Kirk was assassinated in September while speaking at Utah Valley University.
