Marvel Studios unveiled fresh promotional content for its upcoming adult-oriented R-rated series airing on Disney+. The Marvel Cinematic Universe shows no signs of stopping, expanding into more mature content after maintaining a PG-13 rating or lower from 2008 to 2023. This trend will persist in the near future for the MCU, with one of its most grown-up projects yet scheduled for release in 2025.
Marvel Studios recently unveiled a fresh trailer and artwork for their upcoming R-rated Disney+ series titled Marvel Zombies. The poster showcases an undead army, with well-known heroes from the MCU like Okoye in the foreground. The trailer hints at a storyline where either all Avengers are deceased or transformed into zombies, causing pandemonium.
In various images from the same series, it’s evident that Okoye leads an enormous horde of undead soldiers. Surrounding her are figures such as the Abomination, Ghost, Hawkeye, Monica Rambeau, and others, all gazing forward with a hint of anticipation, suggesting they are preparing for their next encounter or meal.
The trailer features various incarnations of characters, such as Florence Pugh portraying Yelena Belova and Iman Vellani playing Kamala Khan (a key figure in the narrative). In one scene, these characters are seen alongside Marvel Cinematic Universe’s debut version of Blade, gazing upward at a zombified Namor the Sub-mariner.
In the movie “Marvel Zombies”, it is revealed that Blade makes his much anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut. His powers and skills are boosted by the Moon God Khonshu, similar to Moon Knight. In the trailer’s climactic scenes, this alternate-universe antihero catches everyone’s attention as he steals the show.
In a fierce clash, Blade displays remarkable skill with his sword against a zombified form of Ghost (portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen), who nimbly dodges and vanishes around him. During their swordsman duel, Blade eventually manages to pierce her before dismembering her into several parts.
In this trailer, Spider-Man contributes another exciting scene, having previously appeared in the first season episode focused on zombies within “What If…?”. Here, he uses his webs to decapitate several zombies simultaneously, creating a gripping action sequence.
Spectators have come across a fresh billboard for “Marvel Zombies“, displaying characters such as Okoye, the Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye transformed into zombies with the series logo at its top.
The upcoming streaming series titled “Marvel Zombies” on Disney+ marks a new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This project is the latest R-rated addition to the franchise and will see an exclusive group of MCU characters battling a zombie outbreak on Earth. The cause? A virus originating from the Quantum Realm, as hinted in Season 1 of “What If…?”. On Wednesday, September 24, all four episodes of “Marvel Zombies” will premiere on Disney+. Here’s a list of previously released MCU projects with R-ratings:
Marvel Studios’ 3 Other R-Rated Projects Released
Echo
In January 2024, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) launched its line of R-rated productions with the series “Echo.” Simultaneously available on Hulu and Disney+, this show continued the stories of Maya Lopez, portrayed by Alaqua Cox, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, whom audiences had previously seen in “Hawkeye.” The narrative unfolds as Maya reflects upon her past, rediscovers her identity, and ultimately unveils the untapped powers hidden within herself.
Echo, though not overly explicit with adult language, offers some of the most graphic and violent action scenes ever seen on a Disney+ series so far. By delving into gritty themes and intense action sequences, the show mirrors many elements typically found in R-rated superhero productions, featuring characters like Maya Lopez and Wilson Fisk.
Deadpool & Wolverine
In July 2024, Marvel Studios ventured into R-rated films within the MCU with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” a move that eventually made it the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. The movie featured Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in leading roles, following Wade Wilson’s quest through time to find a replacement for Wolverine to save his universe. Along their journey through the Void, they met quirky allies and enemies from various realms of the multiverse.
The third film upheld the high standard established by the initial two Deadpool movies, offering non-stop R-rated action, profanity, and emotional depth throughout, all thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ continued commitment to embodying the beloved Deadpool character as fans know him. With a staggering 118 uses of the F-word, exploding heads, and numerous violent, bloody scenes, this Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production demonstrated its ability to captivate audiences with a more mature narrative on the big screen.
Daredevil: Born Again
Following Echo’s debut, I found myself once again immersed in the small screen world of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio for “Daredevil: Born Again.” This new series served to validate the narrative threads from the Netflix Defenders Saga. As we move forward a few years, my character Matt Murdock finds himself grappling with a dramatically altered New York City landscape, as Wilson Fisk steps into the role of mayor, causing an unprecedented level of turmoil and disorder. With a heavy heart, I’m compelled to don the Daredevil suit once more.
With plenty of F-bombs and some of the most brutal scenes the MCU has ever seen, Born Again certainly earns its R-rating. After all, who can forget the gruesome finale where Kingpin squishes a guy’s skull like a melon? So, it’s safe to say fans are expecting nothing less than intense action as the series continues, promising more hard-hitting episodes when Season 2 drops in 2026.
