Every holiday season, we eagerly anticipate a movie musical that graces our screens. Last year it was Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown”, the year before that he was Willy Wonka, and in 2022 we watched the Whitney Houston biopic. In 2021, we enjoyed West Side Story, and so on. This year, however, is different – instead of an adaptation of pre-existing intellectual property like “Wonka” or “West Side Story”, or a musician biopic such as “A Complete Unknown” or “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, we have something completely new: a feature film adaptation of a documentary about a husband-and-wife duo called Lightning and Thunder, who sang Neil Diamond songs in Milwaukee. Interestingly, both films share the same title, “Song Sung Blue”. However, only one of them is directed by Craig Brewer, the man behind movies like “Dolemite Is My Name” and “Hustle & Flow”, featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson with exaggerated wigs and Wisconsin accents. Jackman’s musical talents are well-known, and Hudson has recently released an impressive debut album. With their combined skills, they could truly captivate audiences.
In simpler terms, Jackman isn’t just mimicking Neil Diamond in this role; he’s actually interpreting or performing the songs as they were originally sung by Diamond. This movie could potentially be a big hit, given the success of “The Greatest Showman” in the past. Michael Imperioli, Jim Belushi, and King Princess make up the supporting cast. If anyone can accurately portray a Wisconsin accent, it would likely be Jim Belushi.
