YouTube Premium users might face account terminations in the near future if they’ve been sharing their family plan with individuals outside of their immediate household, as YouTube starts to strictly implement its existing policies in a manner similar to Netflix’s enforcement strategies.
Users who utilize a shared YouTube Premium or YouTube Music family plan with individuals residing at various addresses are now being sent warning emails. As reported by Android Police, these messages indicate that the subscriptions will be temporarily halted within two weeks unless every user adheres to YouTube’s household policy guidelines.
The message states that to maintain your YouTube Premium family plan, all members must reside in the same house as the family manager. It seems you might not be living with your family manager, so your subscription may get temporarily suspended after 14 days.
As a dedicated user, I’d have to say that dropping Premium doesn’t necessarily cut us off from YouTube or YouTube Music entirely. However, we’ll be subjected to ads and won’t get to enjoy the added perks that come with the premium subscription.
YouTube takes aim at password sharing
The enforcement resembles Netflix’s contentious strategy against password sharing, which prohibits individuals outside a household from accessing an account without purchasing extra user slots.
In 2023, YouTube introduced a rule for the same household, which now seems to indicate they are intensifying their efforts in enforcing these policies more rigorously.
Regardless of the numerous cautionary emails sent out, YouTube maintains that no official changes have been made. As stated by a representative to CNET, “Our family plan policies remain unchanged, and we are consistently enforcing them.
Despite this, the decision is being made while YouTube is under criticism for its increase in Premium subscription costs. In certain instances, families are spending nearly $500 yearly just to access ad-free videos and music, a high price tag that has made the idea of sharing accounts more attractive as an alternative.
The recent clampdown on password sharing represents another wave of debate swirling around the Premium service. This Google-managed platform has previously come under fire for accusations of concealed “restricted content” within its search outcomes, allegations it refutes.
Given increasing costs and stricter limitations, many viewers might soon question if YouTube Premium continues to justify its expense.
