As a big gaming fan, I really agree with what former Santa Monica Studio director Meghan Morgan Juinio is saying. It seems like the industry is so focused on making these huge, expensive AAA games that it’s actually causing a lot of problems – we’re seeing layoffs, games get cancelled, and even studios shutting down. It’s a worrying trend, and she’s right to point out that this obsession with massive projects is a big part of it.
At Gamescom Asia, Morgan Juinio – formerly of Sony’s Santa Monica Studio – explained that major game publishers need to invest in smaller, more diverse projects to ensure the industry’s long-term stability. She believes that since the pandemic, the focus has been too much on quick wins and not enough on building a healthy future for gaming.
She believes now is a good time for everyone, regardless of their position, to think about the future – perhaps five to ten years ahead – and make adjustments. This is because many decisions were made during the pandemic to address immediate needs, and we need to re-evaluate those in the long term.
Developers and players are “desensitized” to graphics and scale
Morgan Juinio acknowledges that big franchises like Call of Duty and God of War are important, but she believes major game publishers also need to invest in smaller-scale projects – what are known as ‘double-A,’ ‘single-A,’ and indie games. She argues this would create a healthier balance between creative freedom and financial security. Juinio suggests companies should move past their immediate reactions to the pandemic and consider their long-term goals and identity.
Morgan Juinio noted that players like games such as Astro Bot and Split Fiction because they focus on being enjoyable rather than just looking impressive. She explained, “A game can be visually stunning, but if it’s not fun to play, it won’t matter.” She believes gamers are becoming less impressed by flashy graphics and huge game worlds, and are instead prioritizing pure fun.
Even with recent layoffs and uncertainty in the gaming industry, she’s optimistic about the future. She believes that creativity and innovation will always be valuable, and that people will continue to want high-quality games, no matter how the industry changes.
