Andy Allo to Lead Alcon’s ‘The Eagles of Newark’ Limited Series From Showrunner Mike Flynn (EXCLUSIVE)

Actress and singer Andy Allo, known for her role in “Upload”, has joined the cast to lead in Mike Flynn’s upcoming miniseries titled “The Eagles of Newark“. Directorial duties will be handled by Anya Adams (“North of North”, “Yellowjackets”), with the series originating from Alcon Television Group. It is an adaptation of the non-fiction book “Queen of the Negro Leagues: Effa Manley and the Newark Eagles” written by James Overmyer.

Allo is set to portray Effa Manley, an influential civil rights activist and the sole woman enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. As stated in a press announcement, the series follows “the thrilling struggles of Effa and her husband Abe as they venture into a daring business endeavor – founding their own baseball team within the tumultuous realm of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Beyond her role as the team’s business manager, Effa Manley was a powerful advocate for social rights, leaving an indelible mark not only on baseball but also far beyond.

Alcon plans to shop the show to outlets shortly.

Effa Manley was a trailblazing individual whose influence on both baseball and civil rights is worth sharing,” stated Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-founders and co-CEOs of Alcon Television Group. “With Mike Flynn leading the way and Andy Allo narrating Effa’s story, we are thrilled beyond measure to broadcast this crucial chapter of history.

Flynn’s works feature in shows like “East New York,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” and “Queen Sugar.” Apart from “Upload,” Allo’s portfolio also encompasses “Chicago Fire.

It goes without saying that I was thrilled to be involved in this project,” Allo stated. “Effa Manley played a significant role in sports history and stood courageously for equality among Black Americans and athletes. It’s an immense privilege and humbling experience for me to breathe life into her story, allowing others to learn about her remarkable legacy. Taking on the role of Effa is an opportunity I consider as the highlight of my career.
