Nintendo has revealed that the GameCube controller intended for the Nintendo Switch 2 can be used beyond just the Switch Online GameCube Classics library, though there might be a few complications when implementing it in this manner.
In a conversation with Nintendo Life, Nintendo clarified that the controller was primarily intended for classic games, which might cause difficulties when used with different games. This implies that the controller is compatible with future Switch 2 software, but Nintendo wants to address potential issues by mentioning possible complications. Fingers crossed, it should work with games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch 2.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the trusty old Nintendo GameCube controller is tailor-made for those classic Nintendo GameCube titles! However, it’s important to note that this controller doesn’t come packed with all the buttons and features you might find in other controllers compatible with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 system. That means, when venturing into games outside of the Nintendo GameCube collection, there might be a few hiccups. But fear not, this classic controller is designed solely for the Nintendo Switch 2 and doesn’t play nice with the regular Nintendo Switch.
During the April 2nd presentation for the Switch 2, it was disclosed that the new Switch 2 would support GameCube games via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and a redesigned GameCube controller for the Switch 2 was unveiled simultaneously. This revamped controller shares a similar design to the original GameCube controller, but offers wireless functionality and includes the Home, Capture, C, and ZL buttons found on the Joy-Con 2 controllers. However, a disclaimer in one of Nintendo’s trailers hinted that the new GameCube Controller for Switch 2 might not be compatible with other games, so Nintendo felt it necessary to clarify this situation.
On the very same day as the anticipated release of Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll have the opportunity to pre-order the latest GameCube controller over at the My Nintendo Store. As of now, it seems that date is May 8th. For those considering purchasing Nintendo’s upcoming system, I recommend checking out TopMob’s Switch 2 preorder guide for additional insights.
