REPO Devs Share Update On Matchmaking And More From First Big Update

The cooperative horror game REPO, unexpectedly popular on Steam, has left its modest developers racing to meet player demand. The studio responsible for REPO, Semiwork, is currently developing the game’s initial update and has recently disclosed additional information regarding the significant changes this update will bring – notably, a long-awaited matchmaking feature.

According to the developer Pontus, in an interview shared by Semiwork and reported on by GamesRadar, the initial update is set to feature the highly anticipated matchmaking system. This will include server password, region selection, a list of servers, and a kick option for players. Additionally, this update will introduce a new level with a variety of fresh treasures, some of which have unexpected tricks and effects that activate when players collect them. New weapons are also part of the update, along with a new gameplay mechanic called Overcharge, intended to enhance the late-game experience.

In addition to the upcoming update, players will find new ways to express themselves through emoticons, enhancing their communication in the cooperative game. The demonstration video reveals a few examples such as angry, sad, disapproving, and extremely disapproving, though it’s unclear if these are the exact emotes included in the initial update.

Pontus elaborated on several concepts that Semiwork might explore in the future, but haven’t started on yet. These could include introducing new gameplay mechanics, partnering with other games, enhancing existing levels, creating tougher monster versions, improving cart upgrades, and possibly implementing a feature for late-game entry – he notes though, this would demand considerable effort. In contrast, it appears Semiwork is not considering a conventional ending to its narrative; instead, they’re focusing on immersive environmental storytelling.

Semiwork has expressed its backing for the REPO modding community as well. Yet, Pontus kindly reminded the modders to optimize their creations to prevent unexpected increases in server costs. Currently, REPO is accessible through Steam’s Early Access program, and Semiwork has mentioned that they might maintain the game in this phase for as long as a year. Since its surge in popularity starting in early March, REPO has become a sensation among gamers, consistently drawing in over 100,000 players simultaneously each day.
