Although Kelly Marie Tran might not be featuring in future Star Wars films or series, Star Wars enthusiasts can still catch a glimpse of her in her recent film, “The Wedding Banquet“. During an interview with TopMob, the actress, renowned for her role as Rose Tico in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi“, shared an appropriate response when asked about Star Wars joining her for her upcoming queer romantic comedy.
In “The Wedding Banquet,” Kelly Marie Tran portrays Angela, a woman in a relationship with Lily Gladstone’s character Lee, who consents to marry Min (Han Gi-Chan), a male gay friend, to aid him in obtaining his green card following his proposal to cover the costs of her partner’s IVF treatment. This movie garnered significant attention upon its Sundance debut, and during their wedding, Min humorously remarks that Angela resembles Queen Amidala from the Star Wars prequels.
When I asked Tran about the moment, here’s what she said:
That was in the script before I was even cast. And then when I read it, I loved it.
It’s clear that such a nod to Star Wars isn’t something you might disagree with me on – I find it quite charming! Though Tran’s part in the Star Wars series wasn’t influenced by this specific reference, it somehow feels like a delightful wink towards her well-known role.
And I mean… she looks just like Padmé, too!

In the film, the line was spoken by Angela’s future spouse, but surprisingly, the actor portraying him wasn’t conscious that he was referencing Star Wars when he delivered the line, as explained by the actor himself during an interview.
I had to look up on Google for that.
Apart from its Star Wars-like qualities, “The Wedding Banquet” is undeniably one of the upcoming LGBTQ+ films that’s worth watching, particularly in cinemas. This movie is a modern adaptation of Ang Lee’s 1993 film of the same name, offering a delightful new take on the tale. Notably, Andrew Ahn, who previously charmed us with his unique queer interpretation of “Pride & Prejudice” in “Fire Island” (2022), is also the writer and director for this film.
During her time on “The Wedding Banquet” set, Kelly Marie Tran found the motivation to publicly identify as queer to Vanity Fair. This decision came after working alongside a predominantly queer cast, including her co-star in the movie, Oscar-nominated Lily Gladstone, and SNL cast member Bowen Yang. Previously, Tran’s character in “Raya And The Last Dragon” had ignited discussions within the LGBTQ+ community.
Although it’s uncertain if Kelly Marie Tran will reprise her role as Rose Tico in live-action again, given the fan harassment she faced, it’s delightful to observe the actress flourishing in movies that resonate with her personally, and notice a subtle nod to her time in the cherished franchise.
