Renowned genre filmmaker Xavier Gens, known for hits such as “Under Paris” on Netflix, “Mayhem!” and “Gangs of London,” is set to direct the upcoming psychological thriller “Lady Chang.” This Thailand-based movie will feature rising star Anais Parello, who previously appeared in “Under Paris.” StudioCanal will be responsible for distribution within France and international sales.

In addition to Pascale Arbillot and Anne Marivin, the movie will also feature Franck Dubosc, a popular French comedian known from hits like “Rolling to You.” Interestingly, he’ll be stepping out of his usual comedic roles for this film.

The movie focuses on Léna, a previous French combat photographer who’s grappling with trauma from losing her team during their last assignment in Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle. She finds solace at an elephant refuge managed by Erika, another expat residing in Asia for seven years. At the sanctuary, she encounters Tangwa, a Burmese resident who assists Léna in dealing with her PTSD. However, things don’t go as expected, and Léna’s past issues reemerge, drawing her into different forms of trafficking. Unwillingly, she must battle for what she thinks is right, at the expense of her own safety and that of those around her. This is the storyline.

Originally, the screenplay for “Lady Chang” was written by the same individuals who crafted “Gangs of London”, with Gareth Evans being one of them. He mentioned that “Lady Chang” will share similar genetic traits as “Gangs of London”, which is a BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated series centered around a former undercover cop turned gangster who rises through the ranks to become a major criminal figure.

The director announced that the movie will feature grand action sequences, stunning visuals, and a captivating setting. It’s also set to be an intense, unconventional thriller similar to “Mayhem!” starring Steven Yeun from “The Walking Dead”. In this film, Yeun plays an attorney who is unfairly dismissed on the very day that a deadly virus begins spreading in his law firm’s skyscraper. Previously, “Mayhem!” was distributed internationally by Studiocanal, with Shudder and RLJ Entertainment acquiring it for the U.S. market.
