In the new Switch 2 model, several enhancements and refinements have been made compared to the original, yet there’s one aspect that remains unchanged. The cartridges for the Switch 2 are still covered in a substance with an unpleasant taste to discourage children or pets from accidentally consuming them.
In a conversation with TopMob, Nintendo’s Takuhiro Dohta revealed that the distasteful coating will reappear on Switch 2 game cartridges, emphasizing their intention to prevent any accidental ingestion by stating, “We aim to ensure no one accidentally consumes it. If it somehow ends up in your mouth, you’ll immediately spit it out.
As an enthusiastic supporter, I can assure you that Nintendo has made it clear that licking a Switch 2 game cartridge isn’t recommended, as it could leave an unpleasant taste in your mouth but won’t harm you. Personally, we found the original Switch cartridges to be quite unpalatable. Unfortunately, we haven’t had the chance to test this theory on the new Switch 2 cartridges. For now, let’s trust Dohta’s advice and refrain from licking the Switch 2 game cartridges.

As a dedicated Nintendo enthusiast, I can attest to the fact that while developing the Nintendo Switch, I once gave it an experimental tongue-brush – a move I’ve regretted and won’t be repeating. It’s hard for me to fathom that others are attempting something so unconventional!
Previously, Switch game cartridges were treated with a substance called denatonium benzoate, which is also used by some farmers to deter animals from consuming their crops. However, it’s uncertain if Nintendo opted for the same material when manufacturing cartridges for the potential Switch 2.
On certain Switch 2 gaming cartridges, you won’t find a preinstalled game, contrary to their somewhat unpleasant flavoring. Instead, these cartridges might be Game-Key Cards, which hold no game data but are essential for play. Additionally, the Switch 2 cartridges have been updated to load faster and come in a distinct color.
On June 5th, the new Switch 2 model will be released, with a base price of $450 and a bundled version including Mario Kart World retailing for $500. Due to tariff effects, Nintendo temporarily halted preorders, leading some to speculate about potential price increases later. However, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 release date will remain on June 5th as planned.
