A rare copy of the 51st issue of Shonen Jump magazine, featuring the original Dragon Ball manga chapter, fetched a staggering sum of more than $9,000 during an auction.
Back in ’84, I stumbled upon the extraordinary world of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, where a character named Goku embarked on an epic quest to find the legendary, golden Dragon Balls that could make any wish come true.
It turned out that Dragon Ball would achieve global fame as one of the world’s largest entertainment franchises, spawning numerous spin-offs, video games, and films.
On March 7, 2025, an immaculate edition of a Shonen Jump magazine, featuring the initial Dragon Ball manga chapter, was put up for auction, igniting bids that were astronomical, breaking even the most powerful scouters’ scales.
Dragon Ball fan buys original manga chapter for $25,000
As reported by Real Sound, the opening bid for the manga chapter was set at 500,000 Yen. However, when all was said and done, it sold for more than seven times that original price.
Eventually, a single enthusiast spent approximately 3.8 million Japanese yen on the item, which is roughly equivalent to $25,000 in U.S. dollars.
Initially published in 1984, this manga was initially priced at around 170 Japanese yen, which is equivalent to more than one US dollar. What an incredible return on investment it turned out to be!
In addition to being nearly perfect, the copy of Weekly Shonen Jump from that particular week was remarkably well-preserved. This exceptional state clearly played a role in the auction’s final price. Given the mass production and casual disposal of these magazines, it’s highly unlikely another pristine issue like this will turn up any time soon.
Although the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, passed away in 2024 from health issues, he left fans a final token of affection with the release of Dragon Ball Daima before his passing.
In October 2024, a new anime was released, featuring a young iteration of the character Goku, who originally appeared in the initial manga chapter a staggering 40 years prior.
Toyotarou, the hand-picked continuator by Toriyama, will take over the Dragon Ball story once it comes out of its break.
