Michael Che Wonders If He’s the Next Black Anchor to Be Fired After Joy Reid and Lester Holt Exits: ‘Well NBC, Only One More to Go’

Over the course of this past weekend on “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update segment, co-host Michael Che brought up an awkward observation: NBCUniversal is concurrently bidding farewell to two significant Black news anchors.

MSNBC anchor Joy Reid, who used to manage the 7 p.m. time slot, has been dismissed as part of a significant reorganization of talents at the news network. Furthermore, NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt revealed this week that he will be leaving after a ten-year tenure in his position.

That, of course, led Che to quip that perhaps he’s the next to go.

This week, MSNBC dismissed its lone non-white primetime host, and Lester Holt declared his departure from the position of anchor for NBC Nightly News. Che commented, “Well, NBC, just one more left to go,” as he gestured towards a picture of himself.

This week, MSNBC terminated its sole non-white primetime host, and Lester Holt announced his resignation from NBC Nightly News anchor position. In response, Che stated, “Well, NBC, you’ve got just one more to go,” while pointing at a photo of himself.

Since 2014, I’ve been sharing the Weekend Update stage with Colin Jost on Saturday Night Live. I stepped into Cecily Strong’s shoes for this role, but prior to that, we both had been co-head writers at SNL, a position we held from 2017 until 2022.

Holt and Reid are leaving their roles in different ways: This week, Holt himself declared his departure from the ‘Nightly News’ anchor position in a memo to his staff. His message read, “After 10 years, if we count my weekend stints as well, it’s time for me to step down from my role as ‘Nightly News’ anchor. It has been an incredible privilege to work with each of you every day, always keeping journalism as our guiding star and our audience at the heart of everything we do.” Simultaneously, he announced that he will continue working with NBC News, but will now focus more on ‘Dateline’.

Regarding Joy Reid, who has been a regular fixture on MSNBC since replacing Chris Matthews in 2020, her departure has stirred up quite a bit of controversy. This controversy even extended within MSNBC, with star host Rachel Maddow publicly criticizing the network for letting Reid go. On February 24, Maddow expressed her disappointment saying, “Joy Reid’s show, ‘The ReidOut,’ ended tonight. And Joy is not moving to a different position within the network. Instead, she is leaving MSNBC entirely, and that is incredibly difficult to accept.” Maddow further added, “I don’t want to see her leave as a colleague here at MSNBC, and personally, I believe it was a mistake to let her go.
